this may be a stupid question, but are most of u taking laptops w. u to PSU? If so are their cable ports in the dorms or only the library?

The dorm rooms are wired into a campus-wide network. I think you have to bring your own ethernet wire to connect in the dorm rooms. Additionally, I am hearing that they are trying to get wireless network/Internet connections to all buildings on campus soon.

here's a map of all the buildings with wireless.....it's pretty ridiculous they have this little wireless capability. They better seriously step it up and fast.

osukid are u going to OSU or PSU, cause I have a question for OSU people but nobody is answering.

So I'm assuming a lot of the other buildings that aren't wireless are at least wired?

Yes everything is wired, but a huge advantage to a laptop is that almost all new laptops have a wireless card included so everyone could use it anywhere. Lots of schools have already gone wireless or a large majority of the campus is wireless. I'm amazed PSU is so far behind. I assumed they would be atleast 50% wireless.

osukid - u gonna answer me?

Sorry, i'm going to penn state. I was torn between there and osu at the beginning of the year. I know only a little about osu, but i'll take a look at your question and reply if I know the answer.

Oh, I was hoping u were attending OSU cause I need to know about how much do kids get for the Scarlet & Gray Scholarship, its for continuing students. But thanks anyways.

I have a desktop but due to PSU's increased wireless connections, I am getting a laptop. Should I also bring my desktop and just leave it in my room?

Anyone think it's weird to bring 2 computers?

And no I'm not some rich kid who wants a laptop. I paid for my desktop myself.

It's not that weird to bring two computers. I have a desktop that I'm leaving at home and I'm bringing my laptop to PSU, but also home with me when I go home. In my opinion, my laptop will be sufficient because you can leave it at your desk and bring it around if you need to, you could even buy a docking station for it when you're at your desk or buy a USB mouse if you don't like using the touchpad at your desk or whatever. Just be sure to buy a lock. Your roommate leaves the door open to run to the bathroom real quick? Someone walking by can snag your lappy that quickly.

Its ridiculous to bring a desktop and notebook. Most of the time your note book will be in with your desktop, and thats a major pain to lug a desktop there and back home. A laptop would be more than enough for anyone up there. Like another has said, get a usb/bluetooth mouse and keyboard and keep it at your desk so it'll be basically a desktop if you want it to be.

What type of lock do u get?

Look at Kensington notebook locks: http://kensington.com/

Your notebook should have a security cable port on it for use with locks. Basically it's a visual and physical deterrent. People see it's locked and anchored to a solid object and won't try to steal it. If they really want it, they'll need to cut it but that's probably not going to happen unless you leave it out in a public place or something. But basically, just don't leave your computer unsecured at school. Put it down to go to the bathroom in the library? Come back and it's gone. I can't stress it enough.

Pretty cool site, thanks man.
