depends a lot on other non-merit stuff though, like legacy, 1st generation, recruited athlete, race..

very interesting thread.

i wouldn't call my SAT score low, but I also wouldn't call it incredibly high. 700M, 620CR, 750W (2070).

i was accepted to UChicago and UMichigan... waiting on Cornell and Johns Hopkins. Also rejected from 2 Accelerated BA/MD Programs-- I am SURE that my low CR score kept me out of these.

As for "how I did it": I'd say a very high Writing score offsets a lower CR score... the sections are very similar in many regards, and it's just not logical that one could do so well in one but not the other. if you have a large gap between CR and W, i feel it immediately indicates that SATs aren't as helpful in evaluating the app.

Personally, I had a lot of other things going for me. Full IB Diploma with 40+ expected points, 2 internships, great recs. My ECs were nothing spectacular, but I chose a few and I stuck with them. I also made sure to tailor my app to one certain EC and make a REALLY big deal out of it.

I also went through an international move halfway through high school without any effect on my academic record, and I think this indicated adaptability and internationalism.

My SAT's weren't that great (1960 total, all below 700..), but I also took the ACT, and had 2 32's for that -- the tests are quite different :/ I think what helped my SAT I was my SAT II's though.. I did much better on those.

For the record, in at Caltech with finaid.

I got a 1680 on my SAT 1. For my SAT 2 I got 560 Math, 520 Bio, and 600 US History. I'm an asian male and my stats are really low but I know I will get into a lot of good schools.

I got into UCSD and am waiting for UCI, UCLA, and UCB but I'm confident I'll get into all three.

For my friend who got into yale with 1860 SAT score, let me clarify that he's a top student at my school, with a passion for music and literature. Im sure his teachers recommendations were outstanding. Im sure he had everything great, including AP scores, except the SAT. This proves that universities are right when they claim that there isnt a SAT cutoff, and that it is one of many factors in the application.

Agree with atomic.

I know a sub-1800 who got into Stanford. He's an athlete though.

At Harvard, a 1950 is the 10th percentile mark. So yes about 10% of people who get into Harvard have a sub-2000 score, but the VAST majority of these students are URMs, recruited athletes, or children of very generous alums.

the thread is discussing people on different playing fields.
although we know admissions isn't just SAT, and I dont want to argue about AA, but getting in w/ a particular SAT score greatly depends on a lot of stuff that has NOTHING to do w/ merit.
legacy, athlete, urm...
so if people keep saying how someone got in a great college w/ a low score, they should specify some other characteristics, b/c those are not the norm, in other words, not a general rule to follow.

eg. if a recruited athlete who is a double legacy and also a urm got into harvard w/ a SAT of 1200/2400 and GPA of 2.0/4.0 , does that give u any more hope? probably not.

i dont know if anyone has said this yet but if you haven't, you should try the ACT. I had about a 2000 SAT (although i was sick, to be fair) but then took the ACT and got a 32 with two 36s (perfect). ive had some friends that were really worried abot their SAT scores and then did significantly better on their ACT. it might just not be the right test for you

In hindsight I should have taken the ACT maybe to just strengthen my application. Luckily I haven't been rejected anywhere but I'm sure that might change the 29th...

But to all the juniors and underclassmen, if you're SAT scores aren't perfect, do something to show your intellect and personality. I went on a mission trip to New Orleans to help clean up (obviously not for college applications) but my experience showed something about my character. Do something to make yourself stand out.

1990/1350 and got into NYU stern (avg. sat is 1447 --> in businessweek it is the highest onw (higher than cornell and penn))

also got into BC business, pending full ride into UMD Smith business, and i got into UMich.

but i must warn that i am hispanic so this can be slightly skewed but not that much. i didn't get into MIT

"onw" i meant one

1710 - Hollins, UNC-CH oos, SI Newhouse, American U.

One of my best friends got into UC Berkeley with a 25 on the ACT, 4.0 weighted GPA, and 600 on his two SATIIs. Explain that one to me please...

my asian male friend got into berkeley with a 1580 on his SATs, and I am not talkin old. that wins.

Did he cure cancer?

no, other than doing twirling all he did was party. although he a pretty solid gpa i think.
