Subject tests for admissions

Has anyone ever heard of Brown waving the two subject test requirements? I know Harvard does and wondered if brown did the same. (What would be the etiquette on emailing them to ask. Do I just email the admissions office?)

Listing the subject tests as “recommended” instead of “required” may be to leave an opening for students from low SES environments or high schools who may not have heard about them in time (if hardly anyone in your high school ever goes beyond the local community college or non-flagship state university, your teachers, counselor, parents, and peers may not ever mention them).

But if you attend a high school where people commonly apply to those colleges, treat “recommended” as “required”.

On Browns website it says that they are ‘Required’ which I know means that your application won’t be acknowledged without them.
I went to a Podunk school and didn’t even know what subject tests were until after I had graduated (which is where I am now: Graduated, wanting to go to a nice university, and going through admissions blind.)
So I am hoping that I can email admissions and ask if they will grant me a special dispensation.

Harvard does not waive, they’ve made them optional. Your option for Brown is to take the ACT in lieu of the SAT.

I have taken the ACT, but my score is on the lower side for the ivies. I am taking the SAT, can I submit both scores? The ACT for the subject test classification and then the SAT for the good number.
(Sorry if this is cringeworthy. I am so inept with all of this.)

  1. As @skieurope said, if you submit the ACT you do it have submit Subject Test scores.
  2. If you want to go the SAT route and you are applying for next year, there are still several upcoming Subject Test dates.

Sure, you can do whatever you’d like. However, in that scenario, Brown will likely analyze you ACT score and exclude your SAT scores since you did not send in subject tests.

Really, you have 2 options: Try to improve your ACT score or take the Subject Tests. I’m not sure what you think Brown admissions is going to say that’s different.

Thanks for all your tips! Oh and if I have any more questions what is the best way to approach the admissions at one of these schools? (I don’t have a GC and I don’t want to sound like a fool in front of these unis, what are and aren’t acceptable types of questions to ask? [obviosuly anything that can be answered online is a stupid question] Is asking about accommodations, and different circumstances during admissions acceptable)

Take the subject tests in June.
