Subject tests for U Mich ann arbor

Hi guys,

I'm an international student (france) and i'm applying to several schools for Aerospace engineering. Tomorrow i will take subject tests physics and Math lvl 2. I am a bit worried because i had very few time to study (~ 8 days) and there are loads of things to know.

I scored 740 on the SAT I math, and i would like to know what scores i should aim for Umich. I only studied with barron's for both subjects and i did not do well on their practice exams, for math level 2 at least. The best score i got in physics was 720 and the best score i got in Math 2 was 630, both in the Barron's.

So what do you think ?

Thanks

Obviously, a strong SAT 2 Math score helps, but Michigan does not require the SAT subject tests, nor does it weight it heavily. A 740 on the Mathematics section of the SAT is solid. How did you do in the CR and W sections of the SAT? Over 600 I hope.

Are you in a French school? Are you in the tres bien zone (average of 16)? In my day, Michigan expected a mention bien on the brevet and a 14+ average in 2nde and 1ere. Now, Michigan prefers mention tres bien in the brevet and an average of 15+ in 2nde and 1ere.

I got 640 CR and 640 W. I also did my TOEFL IBT, got 112/120.

I was in a semi-international school. So i had the Baccalaureat S (Option internationale, <a href=“Baccalauréat français international — Wikipédia”>http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Option_internationale_du_baccalauréat</a>). Which means i had english literature with huge weight (more than maths or physics), as well as American History and Geo, also big weight. So overall much harder than regular french system, i hope they understand that, especially for weighted averages, which all my averages were in 1ere and Terminale. This explains the GPA difference from Seconde to 1ere.

In terms of grades i have

Brevet : 15
Second overall average : 16
1ere overall : 14
Terminale : 13.7 ((i had some struggle in english mostly,)

And my BAC with mention Bien, 14,25.
But i sent them an official conversion for the OIB to letter grades.
I hope it’s enough. I didn’t know they were that much aware of french grades for undergraduate admissions since regular french school doesn’t give you a sufficient level of english to study in the US/UK.

I am currently in a GAP year, trying to add to my résumé, i already did 3 months of volunteering in a children’s hospital in Peru. I hope they consider this, because most europeans don’t have any volunteer work experience at all when they leave high school.

Michigan’s office of admissions receives 10,000+ international applications. They have experts on every major system, including the French Bac. Your grades are good and you are certainly within the range. Translating your grades is not necessary, but Michigan will take them into consideration. US universities employ holistic admissions practices, which means it is impossible to predict what will happen. I have seen students with 17/20 averages get rejected by Michigan while others, with 15/20 averages applying the same year from the same school, were admitted. There is no way of knowing.

That being said, SAT 2 in Mathematics 2 is not required, or even expected/recommended, by the CoE. If you do well in it and get a 770+, by all means submit it. But if you do not do well, do not submit it.

If you do get 630 in the last Math2 practice of Barron’s, you may still get 700+ in the real test. Barron’s would get you over prepared.

Alexandre => Ok thanks, so good is considered above 770 ? Same for physics ? If i get a 740 i still send it ?

Billcsho =>> i heard that too, we’ll see if it’s true :)

A score in the 700 range (for either Math 2 or Physics) will not hurt, nor will it help in my opinion. Once the score creeps in the upper 700s, it has a positive effect on admissions.

The last practice in Barron’s Math2 is particularly difficult. Your best practice score is likely not from the last practice test though.

Just finished, i think i did ok. Best score with physics.
I’ll post the results when i have them, so people can compare with the scores i got in the barron’s.

So…how did it go?

My son got a 700 on Physics, which sounds OK but it’s just 57th percentile. We are not planning to send it to Michigan, but we think it might help at some other schools such as NYU, GWU, Syracuse, et al.

Any opinions or updates from the OP, whose thread I am trespassing upon? (Je regret)

@TR250Tom Yes, almost forgot to post my scores haha :)

So i got 720 in math 2 (so barron’s was a good book for me) and also 720 in physics. I will send both. I’m maybe a bit dissapointed for the physics score.

But i’m quite happy overall since i only had one week to study for both (i was volunteering in south america, took the actual test in Peru)

Concerning your son, remember that it’s 57th percentile but the pool of students who actually did the Pysics test is made of less students, who are higher achievers than the regular SAT. So a 57th is not that bad.
