On Stanford's website, they say this:

"SAT Subject Tests are recommended but not required. Applicants who do not take SAT Subject Tests will not be at a disadvantage. Because SAT Subject Tests are optional, applicants may use Score Choice to selectively send their SAT Subject Test scores."

I would rather not send my subject test scores because they're not that great my reasoning test scores are a lot higher (2240 overall). If I did send subject tests, my two highest are a 680 in French and a 730 in Literature and I would probably just send the 730 but since they're not exceptional I don't really want Stanford to see them.

However, it does say they're recommended is this one of those things where they just say it's recommended but they really mean required? Is it some sort of understood message that even though it's "optional" they still expect you to do it?
