I know Georgetown strongly recommends 3 subject tests and that if you submit less you have to send in an explanation.

I have a dilemma because I've only taken 2 subject tests and the only subject test that would make sense for me to take in January is Spanish. However, I don't think I'll score well. I mean I'm in AP Spanish and my Spanish is okay...but I've been doing practice tests and my score sucks.

I think taking a 3rd subject test will hurt my overall app so what should I do? Should I take it since it's "strongly recommended"....or just submit two tests?

Many applicants do not send three subject tests. Language subject test scores tend to be skewed by the large number of native speakers taking the test, although this is less true for Spanish. Consequently, as long you score above 650 it wouldn’t matter very much.

Alternatively, if you have not taken much Spanish, a lower score would at least indicate competency and prove that you are challenging yourself.

Also keep in mind that some schools do require all of your Subject Tests (Cornell, UPenn, Yale, etc.) so a low score might hurt you at other non-Score Choice schools.

May I ask which two tests you have taken? Literature has a harsh curve but does not require much preparation. If you scored well on CR you should score well on the literature test.

I took US history and Math 2. I’m not a science person at all so that knocks out Bio, Chem, and Physics. The only language I can take is Spanish…there’s no sense in taking Math 1…so the only tests I can take are Spanish and Literature.

I was deciding against lit because I used a Princeton review and Barron’s book and the lit seemed very difficult lol. Are you sure you don’t need to prep a lot? I got a 700 on CR.

Hmm, lit is very difficult. I should have said instead of little prep you need little knowledge in that you don’t need to take a lit class to do well. Whereas, it is hard to self-study USH or a science. I am a rather flawed example, but to give you an idea, my 800 CR translated to a 770 in Lit.

You seem to be leaning towards taking Spanish or not taking any at all. If I were you, I would not take either and spend the time on the numerous Gtown essays.

I’ve applied ED to another school so I’m not as worried about essays as I am fulfilling the testing requirement for Georgetown. I have two essays done…just need to figure these SATs out haha
