Hello,

Today I received my final grades for the Spring, C-, C-, D, D. My quarter GPA was a 1.35 so I am now subject to academic disqualification. My cumulative is above a 2.0 and I have only been put on probation once before (that was last winter). I’m heading into my fourth year as an undergraduate (3rd at Davis).

From what I understand I will be sent a notification from the dean of engineering and asked to come see an advisor immediately. However, I am out of town for the summer and it will be difficult to make it back. How must this meeting be conducted? Will I really have to fly back just to talk to an advisor?

Also, I am scheduled to study abroad during July and will be taking 8 units. Do you think the advisor will be ok with this? Although it may be seen as a privilege, it will be boosting my GPA and is technically a summer course.

Thanks!

You don’t have to see your advisor until fall quarter, because they know that there are students who aren’t taking summer classes, and most advising appointments are made during the regular school year, not during summer or breaks.

My summer abroad courses are through the University, it’s “Summer special sesson”. Do you still think that I will not have to speak with an advisor until the Fall?

Yes, you don’t have to speak with an advisor or academic counselor until fall. Last spring, I was on Academic Probation because my quarterly GPA dipped below a 2.0 due to C-'s in all my classes, but even though I was taking summer classes at UCD, I didn’t have to speak to an advisor until fall quarter (I couldn’t schedule an appointment with an academic counselor during the summer anyway, since there were no slots for advising appointments then). When it comes to things like academic probation and disqualifications, you want to schedule an appointment not with your major advisor, but with the academic counselor of your dean’s office. That’s what I had to do when I was on academic probation.
