So I am starting school next month but the FA office is telling me I need to get a form from the IRS stating I have not filed a tax return from last year and submit that as well as a non-filer form. How do I go about getting this to send to the school?
^sounds like you need the last one: Verification of Non-filing Letter
proof that you did not file a tax return
Okay they told me to log into my FA account online through the school to see what needed to be filled out. Apparently the tax thing is under I believe the independent verification document.
Now here’s another situation, do I have to disclose the food stamp benefits of someone else in my household when I am not receiving them and especially if I am not going to be staying with them upon attending school? That’s kind of complicated because my grandmother does not want that information given out. I do not know if I should clock no or yes on that(not going to lie) and if I click yes, would they actually ask for that information?
Why doesn’t your grandmother want you to reveal that she receives “food stamps”?
Does your financial aid package cover your cost to attend college?
Yes it should. I qualified for something like $800 and some loan of up to $7k Does the EBT information get shared with social security by the school’s financial aid department?
So your school only costs $7800 for the year?
It sounds like your grandma is concerned that she wouldn’t get as much in food benefits if SSA knew about them?
No I think she’s worried her check would get cut out. No my school costs 1k something. I may have to go a different outlet than financial aid I guess.
Why would your grandmas benefits be on your financial aid forms? Did she adopt you. If not…her info is not included.
Well on the independent verification form, it asked if me or anyone in my house received SNAP benefits in 2014 and 2015. It said if asked, you will provide the receipt of the SNAP benefits.
If anyone has been through this process before and said a family member received snap benefits did you have to give out their information?
If you are filing FAFSA as independent, then are you a household of “one” thus your grandma doesn’t count?
Maybe that’s it. I remember when I was on SNAP back in 2011 or so I didn’t give out my sister’s information because she and her husband were well financed and all(he works at airforce base). That is when I was reapplying every three months to keep them on the government site.
If you are an independent student for FAFSA and didn’t work, or didn’t have to file a tax return, they are probably wondering how you support yourself, hence the verification.
SNAP benefits and SSA are 2 different entities. If OP was receiving SSA benefits, those will expire once OP turns 18 or graduates high school (g-ma would be receiving benefits if OP is under 18). If you were getting SS benefits, you should be submitting a copy of your award letter.
G-ma is probably receiving SNAP benefits based on having OP as part of the household and Op will be on the budget. You do not have to adopt a child or be their court ordered legal guardian to get SNAP benefits for them. Therefore, Op should be answering yes to the question and submit a copy of the budget letter. SNAP is a means-tested federal benefit program.
Even though OP is independent for Federal aid purposes, s/he will generate a low income verification because the school wants to know how OP eats everyday and who provides basic support.
I am surprised that minimally your have not received full Pell unless you are working and made a sizeable amount of money.
Well I am not on SNAP and she was on it before I got here. It’s not the college, that’s already been completed it’s the financial aid. I guess this should be moved over to that section. Yes I receive SSI(want to get off of it) but not SNAP(never applied here in SC). I am not 18, I am 35. Late bloomer and all. I don’t have to pay rent, I have paid some of the bills here but that’s it. Thing is, I’m staying here unreported(she’s 80 and wants things done a certain way, like telling them in person and there’s not one local her car is in bad shape). It’s not my fault it’s hers and my mother, the payee( a mistake I made when filing for SSI). And unfortunately I have to sink or swim. So if financial aid needs to know her SNAP information when I’m not part of the program and will share that with SSA then I may have to look to other loans to pay. It’s only $1100 anyway.
That’s what I think I saw. Maybe something’s changed. I will not know until(if) I get my award.
Okay I saw this thread was actually moved.
You do NOT need to list your grandmother’s benefits on your financial aid application form.
