I am a high school student who was recently accepted into a university. I was selected for federal verification by the school and it is requesting my tax information. I don’t have any tax information, so I filled out a verification of non-filing (form 4506-T) and faxed it to IRS on December 10th. It has been 8 days and the school still hasn’t received my information. Am I doing something wrong? When can I expect IRS to send the information to the school? I talked to my economics teacher and he told me that IRS is severely understaffed, so am I being too paranoid and not patient enough? I have called IRS multiple times with the same result of “we are experiencing technical difficulties” and I plan to call the school tomorrow.
@twoinanddone well that would’ve been nice to know 8 days in advance.
But yeah, I filled out form 4506-T, checked box 7 (verification of nonfiling), put the college’s financial aid address as the third party, and faxed it to the number the instructions told me to fax it to.
So since they won’t send it to schools, does that mean I will have to send in another form to send the verification to me, and then send that to the school? (Please tell me there’s an easier way to do this since it’s already 10 days late and I would like to receive my financial aid package sooner rather than later)
If you followed the instructions and it said it would send to a third party, they will. I have only ordered them online and I don’t think that is an option, but if you faxed it (signed) it must be. Sorry for the bad information.
What did the instructions say about the time it takes? 10 working days? You are dealing with the government, and at this time of the year a lot of people are on vacation. If they are mailing the verification to the school, you are dealing with the government agency’s mailroom and with the school’s mailroom. It is not like they walk to the mailbox and drop it in. If you sent in the request 8 days ago, only 5 of those days were working days. You have to be patient.
@twoinanddone I just called them and finally got to talk to someone. She told me to wait 10 business days and to call back on the 26th if I don’t receive any status update. And yeah, I know I’ve been low-key freaking out, so I’ll try to be patient.
@mommdc Yeah, that is actually a really good idea.
@sybbie719 thanks for the heads-up, but I have already submitted my parents’ tax transcript (in which the school has already received). Now I’m just trying to patiently wait for my own information to come in
Speaking of which, does anyone have first-hand experience submitting form 4506-t to the IRS to send to a school and would care to let me know how long it took for the school to mark whatever was requested as received just so I have an idea of how long to wait?
