Submitting a Resume

Did anyone submit a resume external to the extracurriculars part of the Common App? Is it common practice? I found that there wasn't much space to elaborate on that part of the CA...

chill out. It’s totally fine. Some of us do, some of us don’t.

It won’t negatively affect you at all.

The thing that worries me is that the people who opted to submit a resume will get to elaborate on their activities…

yes and the AO might be frustrated by the extra work he is doing by reading your resume. So, two-side-sword.

^Agreed. I did, unfortunately, but my friend who got in last year didn’t and suggested against it for me this year. He said something about an adcom saying that resume’s weren’t necessary if the Comapp was enough room for you to add all your info.

I personally did, but like the previous posters said, only if you think it really elucidates important stuff that wasn’t on the Common App. I had a bunch of things in a couple activities that wouldn’t even marginally fit, so I took advantage of the additional info section.
Of course, only time will tell where that gets me, or anyone else this year :).

I added a resume to let them know about a bunch of music-related experiences that wouldn’t fit anywhere on the common app, and to describe some awards that needed explanation. That was it, though - just music and selected awards.

Mistake? Maybe?

Would they contact you if they needed more information about an activity that you do?

^ I don’t think so, they wouldn’t have that much time.

I didn’t, but simply because I felt that even I had a resume, the bulk of it would be repeating what the common app said and adding only a sentence or two, which didn’t seem worth the adcom’s time.

I sent one in bc common app only lets you list activities and I felt like listing debate awards in the awards section was messy and disjointed, and along with that added a couple other activities that wouldn’t have fit on the CApp…
the result, I got in but I don’t know what difference the Resume made. It honestly wasn’t a huge part of myu application. Use it if you have something to put on it.

Relax. It’s not a necessity whatsoever. Minute details of your ECs aren’t going to be read.

I didn’t submit one. I felt that it would just be too repetitive since most of my EC’s were pretty self-explanatory anyway

Not even the five-word descriptions on the Common App activity part?
