Submitting Test Scores

I am having a very hard time deciding between Brown or Penn for ED. I am leaning slightly toward Penn, but from what I understand, I am required to submit all my tests ever taken. I only want to submit my ACT. My SAT is bad. The way the website says what needs to be submitted is confusing to me.

So do I have to submit my SAT and ACT? Would I be better off applying ED to somewhere where I can only submit the ACT?

I think Penn requires you to submit all test scores, so you would need to submit both ACT and SAT. I am not positive on this though, seeing how I only took the ACT and didn’t need to worry about it.

I feel that you should apply ED to the school that you truly want to go to. Having difficulties deciding which school you want to apply for ED makes me feel like you shouldn’t apply ED for either, but that’s just my thoughts on that.

From my understanding Penn requires you to submit all your SAT scores OR all your ACT scores. Submitting all your ACT scores fulfills this requirement and your SAT I does not need to be sent. However…since I believe Penn requires you to send SAT II scores, your SAT I will be on that score report…but they will likely disregard it.

I could be wrong though, I’d call their undergrad admissions office…

Ok…so since I’m applying to Penn and I wasn’t sure about your question I called the Penn Admissions office, and they said they would like all your test scores, ACT/SAT. When I asked them if sending your SAT or ACT alone, with subject tests, fills the requirement he said yes, but Penn prefers to see all scores. He also said that not sending the both in would not hurt your chances if they didn’t know you took both?

This confused me…does anyone know the answer to OPs question for sure, since I always thought all colleges asked for SAT I or ACT, not both?

You can call the admission office to get the official clarification but the wording from the website is quite clear, you can submit either SAT+SAT II scores or ACT scores (SAT II scores are not requited if you have ACT scores with writing), either set will meet the requirement. However, you are asked to submit all scores from any tests that you have taken whether it be SAT and/or ACT.

From Penn website:

Penn requires either the SAT Reasoning Test and two SAT Subject Tests OR the ACT with Writing. No preference is given to either test. However, Penn requires that applicants submit all testing results from each administration of the ACT, SAT, and SAT Subject Tests.

The answer you got from the admissions Office seems disingenuous and not really an answer. I’ve never heard of any school requiring both SAT and ACT test scores.

What I was implying is that even though there’s one requirement, they make you send both. This would mean that they do take a look at all of the tests, most likely? Because one of my subject tests is a 560. Everything else is okay.

Disingenuous? The answer is quite consistent with what they instruct on their website. They are not requiring both SAT and ACT, but if you have taken any tests, they want the scores from all your sittings, no exception. Many competitive schools have this very same policy, Yale is another that I know have this very same policy.

ttparent…I’m a bit confused. I got a 2280 on my SAT and 700+ on all my subject tests which puts me in Penn’s range. If I send in all my SATI and SATII attempts, Penn still wants my ACT scores?

Yes, if you have taken ACT test. No, if you have not taken it (ACT).

PS: this is not a be-all-end-all kind of thing, don’t sweat it too much. You have good SAT scores, one bad ACT score is not going to hurt you, IMO. You are well within the range, the rest of your application is a lot more important.

Runi, you are in no trouble with that. I was more talking about a good ACT score paired with a good SAT I score, but with really bad subject tests. Or something like that.

Ok I understand what you guys are saying. Thanks ttparent and Engineerjw

And to Engineerjw, if you have one 560 and everything else is 700+ you should be fine. Penn wants to see all your scores, but they will only really consider your top scores. If everything else is fine you should be okay. I would only be concerned if the 560 is in the subject that you are planning on majoring in or something…in this case I’d retake but otherwise if you have a couple solid SAT II scores that’s enough.

NO. Hold on.

You have the right to “score choice”. Seriously, you should send only what you WANT to send. I sent only the scores I wanted to send to Penn and no one in admissions ever said anything about it.

Some people will look upon this as “cheating” or being “dishoneset”, but honestly, you have the right to not send a score for a test that you didn’t do well on because you didn’t feel well that day, didn’t study enough, had a bad day, etc etc. It’s unfair also because when you send scores to colleges, you can’t even explain to them why you got a bad score because there’s nowhere to write it…

IMO, send what you want. If you know that a potential employer is going to review your resume, would you put all the bad things you’ve done in your life on it? No.

I just feel like it’s ridiculous that they would request you to send all of your scores without also requesting any explanation for scores that don’t aptly represent you…

I am not sure that is a good advice for anyone to make. CB gives you the service to use ScoreChoice but your obligation to tell the truth is between you and Penn. You are signing your signature on the application that you are being truthful and honest about what you submit and the instruction explicitly states that you are required to submit all scores. Unethical and dishonest should not be something that is taken lightly. Everyone in their lives have encountered people who cheat and lie to get ahead no matter how small, it is not a good thing.

So if I send a 1670, 1920, and 2050 SAT as well as a bad subject test, you think it would be alright?

1670? Dude that’s less than 600 on average ._.
I think you won’t be alright.

Well yeah. Exactly my point. But my ACT is a 31 and my final SAT is a 2050. It’s kinda weird.

2050 is ok but it is by no means a great, or even good score, for this level of school.
And that 2050 is your third try!

Let’s hope your test scores are not the highlight of your application =)

When did you take the test that got 1670? One way to look at it is that the progressing improvement shows your hard work and perseverance. Although 31 and 2050 is still closed to the 25th percentile of past admitted students, I think that maybe more problematic than past bad scores.

I took the 1670 in October junior year. Then in April I got the 2050. Ideally I would submit just the ACT. But it doesn’t work like that. That’s all. I just don’t want to apply ED to Penn if I know I won’t get in. This thread has given me valuable info. Thanks.
