Submitting TWO SIR's

Is it permissible for me to submit an SIR (a statement of intent to register, which is very heavy phrasing) to both UC Berkeley and the University of Michigan? I have looked up the subject everywhere, and have come up with a variety of conflicting answers and opinions. Are there potential consequences for submitting to both schools? Thank you.

No, you are not permitted to submit two SIR’s because you are not permitted to attend both schools (unless you can clone yourself)…

You can, however, submit to one school prior to May 1st and if, and only if, you change your mind before May 1st, notify school #1 that you won’t be attending, and then, and only then, can you submit SIR to school #2…

What is the problem anyway? do you have trouble making decisions? or no time to visit?

The first, because of the second.

haha…have you tried to get an extension or will you not have an opportunity to visit at all?

if not, flip a coin…can’t go wrong with either one…where do you live?

The problem is that schools take your SIR as just that: an intent to register. If you submit at both, it makes it very difficult for them to evaluate their incoming class and use their waitlist accordingly. You may, however, ask for an extension.

Not unless you want to risk them rescinding your app.

But is there a real risk of recission if two SIR’s are submitted?

Anyone…?

I don’t see any risk. Cal and Michigan would not know. You should be able to make a decision by now. Cal is the better academic school, but both good. You need to decide for dorm choice, student orientation, ect. You won’t get your deposit back and You are effecting wait listed students as well. Make a decision and move on.

These schools reserve the right to rescind your application if they discover you have double deposited. You have to evaluate how comfortable you are with the possibility of them finding out. What if a bitter schoolmate calls them? What if your GC accidentally contacts the wrong school? etc.

My opinion? Ask for an extension or pick and move on.
