Sucks to be Asian in high school

Asians=Awesome. I’m as white as white gets, but asians are absolutely awesome (at least the ones I know). Also, not all Asian people have crazy strict parents (and not all of them are even that great in school).

This thread is pathetic. Blacks have such an extreme precedent of racism and discrimination in this country that complaining about being “discriminated” against because people think you are good at math is ludicrous.

Complaining about it online just proves their stereotypes.

Get some perspective people.

as an asian myself saying this, honestly please stop with these threads.

Nope. I like being Asian in high school.

whatever lol. i can make kickass dumplings. life is good.

Poseidenj you wrote how I felt better than I could have myself.

fried chicken?

Sucks to be you in high school, at least I know that.

unless your Peter Chao

Being Asian in high school was/is great (:

I frickin love being Asian in high school.

Um what? Asians definitely [do experience “real” racism](http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/32190720#32190720), though it’s such a stupid term. So-called minor discrimination like “positive” stereotypes, Orientalism & categorization as the “other,” and fetishizing & racialized sexism, are the basis of “real” racism, and it cannot be eliminated without eliminating the prejudices, however minor they are, upon which it is built.

^ I agree. You can’t trivialize the racial struggles that any race may have gone through or is still going through. Disgusting acts of racism are not limited to Blacks or Mexicans or Asians or anyone. They are a concern for people all over the world, and though their effects vary from situation to situation, people of all races have at some point experienced some form of horrendous racial discrimination. There has been African enslavement, the displacement of Native American lands, as well as countless cases of Vietnamese and Korean rape. So yeah, it’s not that fair to say that because one race has been horrendously manipulated and exploited, other races cannot express their concerns over the racism that is present in their lives.

But yeah, to the OP, don’t worry too much about it. There will always be idiots who judge people by stereotypes, and it sucks, but just ignore it. I mean, last week, for 4 days in a row, I would walk outside on the streets and each day some idiot would roll down their window and make fun of me for being Asian, but really, the joke is on them because who honestly has the free time to go driving around to insult people for their race? Lol. But yeah, I seriously wanted to punch their lights out -.-

I agree with you on everything else - but this. JUST BECAUSE WE ARE ASIAN DOES NOT MEAN WE SPEAK OR WRITE CHINESE LIKE A NATIVE! I have difficulties speaking in Chinese (mandarin). I took classes as a small child and could not interpret it. While its true I have more exposure as an Asian than someone else who is not, which does help, it cannot be implied. Some people could be 2nd generations whose parents cannot speak Chinese fluently.

In addition, I expect these classes to have written portions - which is VERY DIFFICULT. Languages that use symbols like arabic and chinese have a different mindset when writing.

Its not as impressive OBVIOUSLY! But just because a person is of a certain ethnicity learning that language, it does not mean ANYTHING, just that they either want an easier time or want to START learning their native language. I know plenty of latino people who cannot speak spanish and plenty of my asian friends who can’t speak chinese (mandarin and kantonese)

i concur with theman. not everyone is fluent in chinese/spanish/etc.
…buuuut the good thing about being asian is that everyone thinks you’re adorable (if you’re a girl), teehee.

Just to clarify, “Cantonese” is spelled with a “C.”

Anyway, I agree. I’m Asian, and I’m probably better at speaking Spanish after taking it for four years, than I am with speaking Cantonese.

It’s good that you’re fetishized and objectified?

I get annoyed when my chinese friends are taking ap chinese their sophomore year because they’re fluent in the first place. i’m not knowledgable enough in korean to actually take an ap korean class (assuming one were made) nevermind pass the second/third level lol XD I don’t mind Spanish as much, lately many schools are developing courses for Spanish fluent speakers taking Spanish as a language, so the intention of seeming like one is excelling in a “foreign” language is counterproductive, but only in that case.

it sucks being overrepresented =/

I’m chinese, and my parents never really make me do anything I outright don’t want to. They’ll discuss it with me, but in the end let me decide. Their expectations for me are quite reasonable/attainable.

The only downside is the asian quotas in colleges, but there’s no point in sitting around complaining about something I can’t change.

oh and just fyi, resume whoring doesn’t help at all, colleges will see it and know that its fake.

Why would it suck being what you are? It sucks being asian as opposed to what? What other ethnicity of people is so perfect?

You do know people can’t make you feel inferior without your consent right?

I don’t want to sound mean but that “Woe is me I’m [insert ethnicity here]” attitude needs to die… everyone has problems everyone deals with stereotypes I’d hate to break it to you but thats life…everybody wants to be better than someone else at something and will use anything to convince you it’s the truth!
Ignore those people and live your life! I don’t understand why people spend so much time focusing on stuff we can’t help (i.e. physical features) instead of living their lives and helping people instead of bringing them down …it’s way to short to spend it hating yourself/other people IMO We have enough of that in the world

My advice would be to get some backbone and tell whoever it is that’s f-ing with you to f-off and be done with them and move on with your life! Or if its just you… realize that you can’t change that… you’re asian! be proud of it ! Do you really want to be 40 years old still living in your parents basement on CC complaining about how being asian has held you back all your life? and I highly doubt being asian is the source of all your problems man …find a hobby, voulnteer, build some character and figure out whatever it really is holding you back and change it.
