I am an Indian student seeking admission to a US university for my Undergraduation in Mechanical Engineering

My Stats :-

Grade 9 - 89%

Grade 10 [ ICSE Board Exam ] - 89.14%

Grade 11 - 83%

Grade 12[CBSE Board Exam]- 88% (Physics-78,maths-95,chemistry-95)

overall in top 5% of my class throughout

SAT 1 - 1750
Maths - 760
CR - 500
CW - 490

I will not be giving the SAT 1 again and will be applying with these scores only

I have just given my SAT 2 and waiting for the results.

P.s.- "I am a robotic enthusiast , love to make arduino bots (have made a few by myself) so would love to carry to ROBOTICS in Future"

Suggest me in which of these colleges do i have a chance of getting in -
1) Purdue University
2) Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech)
3) Pennsylvania State university Main Campus
4) University of Minnesota – Twin Cities
5) Illinois Institute of Technology
6) Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) (Robotics Engineering)
7) Stevens Institute of Technology
8) The University of Virginia
9) Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI)
10) University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign
11) Rutgers University
12) Rensselaer Polytechnic Imstitute
13) Polytechnic University of New York, Brooklyn

will you be full pay or will you need financial aid?

I choose those colleges that would be a good Return of Investment , so that even if i take loan , after my graduation and after i land up with a job i should be able to pay off the loan …so probably i would take loan if i am not given any financial aid

1) Purdue University => unlikey
2) Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) => unlikely but try
3) Pennsylvania State university Main Campus => probably branch campus first but you can apply and see (your CR meets their requirement I think and the M is very good)
4) University of Minnesota – Twin Cities => perhaps
5) Illinois Institute of Technology => better odds than at the previous
6) Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) (Robotics Engineering) => good odds
7) Stevens Institute of Technology => okay odds
8) The University of Virginia => out of reach
9) Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) => reach
10) University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign => reach
11) Rutgers University => possible
12) Rensselaer Polytechnic Imstitute same as 9
13) Polytechnic University of New York, Brooklyn => unlikely but try

if i have to choose top 6 preferable uiversities out of these which are those that you suggest

please suggest some other reach universities as well

I have two serious concerns with your application that make your matriculation at an American university difficult.

The first is the 1750 SAT score. It is low for an international applicant who needs aid and has no extraordinary talent in sports or in his or her extracurriculars.

The second is your finances. This is the biggest concern of any applicant except for those whose parents can afford to pay out upto $65000 each year. For internationals, finances are an even greater concern because all but a few colleges, relatively speaking, offer internationals ANY financial aid. In this country, you will not be able to take out loans, and I don’t know if you’ll be able to get loans, or enough loans, in your country.

So schools I’m going to suggest are known to give aid to internationals, but whether they will give it to you is unknown, just as whether it will be enough aid is unknown. You will have to compare these lists of schools that give aid to internationals against your wish list:

http://www.desperateguide.com/us/top-25-financial-aid-colleges-in-us-for-international-students-need-aware

http://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/the-short-list-college/articles/2013/09/19/colleges-that-give-international-students-the-most-financial-aid

The webpage lists overlap. Look first for the schools you’ve named above to see if they’re on these lists. If they’re not you’ll have to pay the full price of the school plus transportation, etc.
