Hi,
My daughter is in her junior year in high school. She is interested in computer science major. Her current grade is 3.8 weighted and 3.5 unweighted GPA and SAT score is 1290. Family income is around 100K. Can you give suggestion for colleges she can apply? We are in San Francisco and our 1st preference will be west coast but open to other location. Thank you all in advance!
What is her CSU/UC GPA? https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
Math and Writing Breakdown for SAT score?
Is she interested in the UC’s/CSU’s? Private? LAC’s?
What’s your budget?
My daughter Unweighted GPA is 3.56, Weighted GPA 3.81, SAT Math - 680 and Reading and Writing - 610.
Yes, She is interested in the UC’s/CSU’s (San Jose State and Cal Poly) / Private and LAC’s. Thanks for reply.
You have a good income but what can you realistically pay each year? She will only be eligible for the federal loans $27K for 4 years plus whatever you can contribute? You could qualify for the Blue and Gold scholarship for the UC’s but the Middle Class scholarship may be discontinued this year. I suggest you run the bet price calculators on each school of interest before applying.
Schools suggestions: Cal states
All Cal states admit by Eligibility index and major except SLO.
Her EI is (3.81x800) + (1290)= 4338.
SJSU’s EI threshold for CS last year was 4550 so a Reach. EI thresholds due fluctuate year to year and SJSU publishes their thresholds.

SLO admits using an MCA point system. Also a Reach with her stats and about a 10% acceptance rate. Software Engineering is a slightly easier admit so she might want consider SE for these 2 schools.

She should apply to her local CSU as an academic and financial safety.
CSU Suggestions for Match schools are Cal Poly Pomona, San Diego State, Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach.
CSU East Bay also has a good CS program along with good job placement due to location.
UC’s. Since her GPA is below 4.0, I would target UC Santa Cruz and UC Riverside.
Privates: University of the Pacific and Santa Clara if affordable.
Hopefully other posters have some Out of state suggestions. Much will depend upon you budget.
Seconding Santa Clara and UoPacific, but run NPC as they don’t meet need.
Further away, Lewis&Clark, UPortland, USeattle, U Puget Sound, New Mexico Tech.
Though outside of your ideal geographical preference area, Allegheny seems to offer a solid CS program:
