Headed to BU for open house next friday. Love boston but I’ve never toured or been on campus before. What should I see or do for sure so that I can get the best idea of the school and people? Would love to love it!

Take a tour if you haven’t already, and really walk allll around campus from top to bottom. Head into some of the buildings, eat in the student union if you can, and try and picture yourself as a student there!

Definitely walk the full campus. Due to time constraints they will not take you down to see the Fitrec (the gym). When I did the tour with my sons, they gave you passes and we were told that if we walked up to the gym and showed your pass, somebody up there would give us a tour of the building. Is there a major or major area of BU that you are interested in attending (i.e science labs, engineering, Sargent College, a coach)? If so, call ahead to see if you meet with someone to see or hear about those areas in more detail. BU is one of those schools where demonstrating interest is a very important part of the decision making process.

Definitely people watch. BU is a big school but the good part is that it is very diverse and there is a group for everyone.

It sounds as though you have visiting Boston before. However, take time to see more of Boston. It is a very walkable city. Walk along the Esplanade, the green space behind BU along Storrow Drive through Back Bay, the Public Gardens and eat at Fanueil Hall. This was one of my favorite things to do when I was a student at BU and is what my son and I do together when I visit him at BU.

Thanks! Lived in the Boston area until 3rd grade, and love the city! I appreciate the ideas! I’m going to study English, Foreign language, travel abroad. Hoping I can check out Warren and West dorms, leaning toward requesting Warren though.

Just two weeks ago, BU opened an amazing new admissions office…right on the Charles River…so start with the official tour first…we were among the first to try the new facility and its truly wonderful.

The dorm that they will show you is a small double in Towers. It is a very small traditional dorm room. The rooms in Warren and West are larger. After your first year, you will have the opportunity for other type of housing so don’t get discourage when you see the dorms. In reality, you only sleep there.

I would check out West Campus as well because it has a different feel than Warren. I definitely thought I would like West better (more campusy), but I wound up moving to East Campus sophomore year. Anyways, I think its good to experience both to decide if you like one before you make your decision about BU.
