Lalapalooza!!!

No - sorry - I didn’t state that clearly. I meant that TMC, Aspen, MAW, etc all tend to pull from the same students and faculty. Schleswig-Holstein tends to pull more European students, and has more European faculty, so there is less “gossip” and transfer of information. In other words, “word gets around” about students who bail, but in this friend’s situation, it didn’t affect him, and I think it’s because information doesn’t get shared across the pond.

It was a tense couple of days but she’s worked it out. Thanks, everyone for your help. My daughter was afraid to let the SHMF opportunity go, given the insecurity of not knowing how she stood with the other programs. She called the office of her top choice program several times. She did not ask for her tape to be reviewed early, but only explained her situation and asked if it would be possible to know when it would be reviewed. Fortunately, they were very kind and understanding of her situation. The teacher whose studio she’d applied to also called back last night and promised my daughter to review her recording ASAP. This morning my daughter got unofficial verbal confirmation that she will be accepted, pending official notification next week. My daughter immediately wrote to the German festival (she had already told them she was having difficulty with the date conflict) and they were extremely cordial, encouraging her to apply again next year.

So this was yet another lesson for her that it is a good policy (usually) to be transparent and polite, and to pick up the phone and call when you have a question, rather than sitting around worrying in silence or discussing among friends. By calling she made it clear that she was serious and interested. I’m glad she went through this little experience-- she learned more than she would have if she’d received all notifications simultaneously and did not need to deal with the pressure.

Congratulations! And great that it worked out as your daughter wished.

Thanks Binx. Your comments were really helpful (I passed them on to her.)

Well, I got rejected from the Tanglewood Publications Fellowship… again. I have to admit, I don’t know what the people deciding on that fellowship are looking for because I thought that I hit everything on their requirements list pretty well, but I guess you win some and you lose some… and I lost that one three times in the last four years.

This whole business of summer programs for music performance makes me crazy! (And I’m just the mom.) It’s like college admissions all over again every single year – check it out: the high application fees ($100 for Kneisel this year.!!) The need to accurately gauge what’s a safety, match and reach for each student. The craziness of making audition CD’s (or even worse, travel plans) during Dec-Feb. I don’t have an alternative. I see how these programs are pretty much heaven on earth for the kids, and mine has had her fair share of great luck and great summers. But you never know what the next summer will bring.

Around here we’re in at a 2-week program, out at 1 top program (Kneisl), wait-listed at 1 top program and waiting to hear from 2 more short programs, both of which she has been accepted to in the past and would happily return to. Also waiting to hear about a 2-week music camp counselor job. If everything falls through…it will be a loooong hot summer back at Mom and Dad’s house – at least with plenty of practice time.

Glassharmonica - congratulations to your daughter. It must be great to have the summer all set.

Cosmos - it’s not you. There are too many uncontrolled factors - in particular, who else was auditioning for TMC, how well they auditioned, etc. Connections? I don’t know that that’s a big factor at TMC, since it’s not a studio/teacher kind of place, but who knows…
EDIT: I just now see that it was a Publication Fellowship position - not a performance one. Sorry.

Cosmos, I was going to say the same thing memake just said. You can never know what unseen forces are at work, what prior connections other applications might have, or what small, almost insignificant differences in two otherwise equal applications might drive a decision.

I feel extremely lucky about my daughter’s MAW news. (but I have other kids with still-uncertain summers) but it’s just one year out of many. Her friends are now learning about their summer application results and it can be heartbreaking or elating-- every few minutes, it seems, thanks to ultra-quick communications.

So, it appears Tanglewood results are out, but what other programs have people heard from? I’m assuming perhaps news is sent out in a rolling fashion by instrument perhaps, but do acceptances go out first before rejections, or is it the other way around? Or, maybe there is no pattern? S (and I!) also are getting impatient with the wait, especially since for some programs the recordings went out way back in early January already. It would be nice to get a handle on the summer schedule, make travel plans, etc. I know glassharmonica mentions picking up the phone and calling with questions, but I imagine it gets quite irritating for people at the various programs to get a bunch of calls asking about results. That said, it does get one wondering when others are getting results and you have heard nothing.

I’m dying for the BUTI results to be released; at my audition they said that they’d tell people by the end of March/early April for sure, so only a few more weeks…

Clarimom, the pattern generally seems to be acceptances, then wait-list results, then rejections, although sometimes all information is sent out at once. I probably wouldn’t call with questions unless in a tight spot like my daughter, who was being pressured to give an answer to a European festival before hearing results from domestic applications. Many programs release results in mid/late March.

Hello! Does anybody know if, by any chance, there is any two week festival happening during the last week of June and first week of July this summer? Preferably free.
Thanks much for your help.

For what it’s worth: If I’m remembering correctly, last year I heard from Interlochen in the 3rd week of March and from BUTI in the last week of March. (The BUTI was a waitlist, so yes’s may be released a bit sooner)

violaguy, not free but you might want to look at [The Philadelphia International Music Festival Summer Camp](http://www.stringscamp.com/)

Do most results come via email? If results come by letter, it occurs to me that due to spring break my S will not be checking his mail for two weeks. This is a concern if programs expect a confirmation or acceptance within a short time frame. Any advice or information?

Clarimom, it seems that results usually come by email or phone. I have not heard of results by postal letter. What festivals are you waiting to hear from?

So far we have heard from Walnut Hill (yes, but won’t know about scholarship until till 3/15),
and rec’d a call from Washington Nat’l Opera (yes w/some $$)…

D would be happy at either of those, but am really hoping for good news from Tanglewood…
posters seem to think that might be in the next 2 weeks…

good luck to all

Going back to Aspen. Best times of my life were there. Would recommend it to everyone.

Got the ‘go’ sign from Interlochen today…now just waiting on Tanglewood…

Can anyone give the pros & cons of these programs?

Walnut Hill

washington Opera

Interlochen

thanks!

Sorry Violaguy, but the only way to apply this time of year to get into a free festival is to fill in a gap that they were unable to fill. Auditions pretty much ended in February. The Philadelphia festival has programs for both high school and college ages. For high schoolers, there are a few other 2-week programs offered through colleges for high school musicians, I’ve seen a few offered, but have no personal experience with them. Maybe someone else has experienced one. In the future, this is the 2 weeks that the BUTI workshop programs are offered, but those auditions were in January.
