Bleah. S is ‘alternate’ at first choice, and still waiting to hear from another. Seems like life is just full of auditions and waiting…

Sure wish they’d let people know what number they are on the waitlist. Not that it would really matter, I guess, since you’re in limbo either way. But at least we might hold off a bit on applying to non-free programs if he was high up on the list.

We’re a yes for Interlochen vocal soloist program, just waiting on Walnut hill and Tanglewood. I did email and ask for an extension for Interlochen b/c they wanted a response by 3/21. Asked for 3/31. Tanglewood says they expect to have answers out by then. Keeping our fingers crossed.

WNO and Walnut Hill are two very different experiences. WNO: very intense vocal study and dramatic coachings, with multiple on-stage performances culminating at Kennedy Center Millenium Stage. Walnut Hill: Vocal study at Natick, MA, masterclass with Ben Zander and off to Italy where you get opera history and watch opera in some stunning outdoor venues, occasionally singing in the streets for your gelato. Both are superb learning experiences but you are not comparing apples to apples.

Don’t feel badly CLRN8MOM, that’s how I knew when the Walnut Hill email came in and that was back in '08. I finally made a scrapbook of all the vocal “stuff” so we could get it out of the drawers, closets, car, etc.

I applied for BUTI by sending in a tape- I’m getting nervous!! I really want to get into the orchestra program, but I’m a flutist. I wonder how many applied and how many get in… I kindof wish I auditioned live now.

A flutist in my youth orchestra got into the BUTI orchestra last year, and he absolutely loved it. Any other flutes audition?

Plumeria, last year my D applied to BUTI, Interlochen and Brevard. I asked them the same question. BUTI was vague and said they got “between 40 and 60” applicants for clarinet, and accepted 11 in the first go round. Brevard had 44 clarinets apply for 8 spots.
I can’t remember how many applicants there were for Interlochen, but between their 2 orchestras and 2 bands I think they ended up taking almost everyone who was on their wait list, for clarinet. Sorry I don’t know about the other instruments. I think it will still be a very valuable experience at BUTI even if you do not make orchestra, especially if Bob Reynolds is still conducting.

Thanks for your reply clrn8mom! I’m really hoping to make orchestra- I’m not much of a band/symphonic wind person, although I’m sure that it would be an amazingly fun and valuable experience. The thing is, I’m not sure if I can pay $6k+ unless it’s something I would absolutely love to do (so expensive, wah!! That’s like a quarter of my college tuition right there, ha…)

@musician34: EEK!! What instrument/program did you apply for?

Is anybody familiar with this program run by MSM? D was accepted and we just want to make sure before we send money. It looks great on the website, the full voice faculty at MSM. 6 week program and D would have to leave straight from her last exam and not come home first Tenormama - is your son going?

Waitlisted for BUTI orch, in for the flute workshop and wind ensemble. Looks like I should start filling out those Starbucks applications… sigh.
Has anyone had experience with the BUTI waitlists? Does any ever /not/ go?

I would also be interested to to know if anyone ever drops out and those waitlisted get in to BUTI Tanglewood. My daughter (a 9th grader) got into two workshops but is actually waitlisted for the Wind Ensemble on two instruments, so we are waiting too. I called Tanglewood yesterday, and while they wouldn’t tell me where she is waitlisted, they said it is a “very short” list and encouraged us to wait as they thought it “likely” she would get in since she is on two lists.

A few years back my D was waitlisted for Wind Ensemble (flute) and did get the call. Unfortunately, she had already made other plans. I would imagine its harder to get into the orch since there are far less flutes.

Son got waitlisted for the wind ensemble but got into the workshop. I think we’ll accept the workshop, but we’ll have to figure out what to do for the rest of the summer. He only wanted to do 4 weeks of music in all so now I’m looking for a two week program–he might just go back to NYSMF for 2 weeks.

POTOMOM-
S not attending MSM summer program - applied to a few others - waiting to hear. I PM’d you. Some of his friends are going, so he can tell his friends to help your D settle in! Hope she has fun!

Got into the Orford Academy Orchestra today. I am really excited about getting to work with Kent Nagano and playing Mahler 4 and 5! Full scholarship :)
