We are considering sending our daughter currently in 10th grade to the CS program for high school students, at Carleton in the summer. We are looking for feedback from anyone (parents and students) who has done the program in the past. What was your experience like? Thanks so much!

My son took the CSSI summer science program so I cannot comment on the CS class, but I can comment on the overall experience and say it was life-changing for him. He loved it. Carleton did a fantastic job with the 3 weeks he was there. He learned a ton, made friends that he still talks to (this was 2 years ago that he went), and really enjoyed the overall experience. They did some field trips like canoeing, going to the Mall of America, and some other things as well. Hope this helps provide some feedback on the environment if not the class itself.

Thanks, kevinjf. Any feedback regarding the programs at Carleton is helpful. Apparently the CS program is new there. This is the second year. So, it is not surprising that there is no feedback on that. But anyone with any additional feedback on the summer science programs there would be great. Thanks.

BUMP . IM CONSIDERING APPLYING TO THIS PROGRAM AS WELL. ANY FEEDBACKS, SUGGESTIONS, EXPERIENCES? PLS
I strongly recommend the summer programs at Carleton. I participated in the SQRI program this past summer, and I feel that it was an amazing opportunity. I met some great people who I still keep in contact with, and I have been able to talk about the research I did on a number of occasions. I’d be more than happy to answer any general questions you may have.
I don’t know anything about the summer program, but I thought you might be interested in this …

What was the workload for SQRI like? How much time did you spend working on papers and assignments? Did you have a lot of time to socialize and hangout?
The SQRI program (and I’d assume all other Carleton programs) was wonderful. I was in the Political Science cohort, this past summer. Our professor (Montero) didn’t go easy with us on the work. Yet, I wouldn’t have wanted any less. The whole 20+ pages reading really binded our group/cohort together. Class was 9-12, then research groups were 1:30-3:30, but we often stayed still until 4:15-30. Then, we came back at 6:30 and stayed until 7:30-8:30. I think the Political Science cohort was the only group that really came back at night. There was plenty of time to socialize and go to all the activities. I missed a couple, but it was worth it. I got really close to the people in my cohort. We still talk everyday and even met up over winter break, and are planning this summer. My time spent at Carleton was fulfilling and I definitely recommend attending if you like pushing yourself and want to meet some of the best people.
my son went to one of the biology programs. I mainly wanted him to do it because when I was his age I had the opportunity to attend a marine biology program at the University of RI. Mine lasted 6 full weeks and I made some deep friendships that survived over 20 years in an age of writing letters and paying long distance charges. His experience was generally good, but not the life changing one it was for me. He made friends and had fun. He ended up applying and was accepted to the college, but will not be attending as he viewed the students as too focused on studying. He is very well rounded (captain of the hockey team as well as salutatorian) and just felt he would rather be in an environment of more diversity (not necessarily racial diversity). He decided to attend a large public university to be able to experience greek life, large intercollegiate athletics as well as excellent academics.
