Well, there are those who are NOT happy with their SAT scores. These people elect to apply. If you are not happy, then I suppose you could explain to them your situation. Or simply apply to another summer program. But no, I cannot answer any of your other questions. I wish I knew the answers

I did recieve a message from the CMU people. Here is what it said:

Hello Ryuuzaki,

I sincerely apologize that your email was not answered sooner. All of the admission counselors have been in committee meetings reviewing undergraduate applications for the past month or so. Unfortunately, we've had limited access to email during this time, and a response to all messages has been delayed. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this busy, yet very important time of year.

As always, if you need immediate assistance, please contact the Office of Admission at (412) 268-2082. One of our Associate Directors on-call or a member of our support staff will be able to help you.

Even if you’ve already submitted your application, feel free to have your teacher send the recommendation to our office. We will make sure that all of the documents are gathered together in your file. I would just have your teacher send the application ASAP because we will not be able to review your application until it is complete.

Thanks for your interest in Carnegie Mellon Pre-College!

Sincerely,

JLG [The Pre-College Admission Team]

Does anyone know if you can take another class or have free time instead of taking the SAT prep?

Wooo, 10 cc'ers... we are almost up to my initial estimate =) ... oh wait that means more competition lol =(

I went to SAMS last year, and I'm applying for AP/EA this year. If I'm not accepted, I have a few other summer programs that I also applied to, but if they all fail I'll go back to SAMS. I have nothing against the program at all -- it was great, but from what I heard the senior curriculum just seemed way to easy.
So, do they accept 50% sophomores and 50% juniors? They can't obviously take a junior over a sophomore, that's not fair.
are you referring to SAMS? I would imagine that's how they do it(not sure). I would prefer that they took more juniors than sophmores though...I'm a junior, obviously
Last year there were about 30-something juniors and 60-something seniors. From what I've heard, the distribution has always been somewhere around there, though it changes a bit every year.

^ I'm glad to hear that...

Im not. Technnol21, you say you got into SAMS right? Can you give me your stats? That would really help me.
Aid a poor soul, please?

Ok, my first post is very fittingly about the most awesome six weeks of my life! I was in AP/EA under Summer Programs for Diversity last summer. I applied to both SAMS and AP/EA, and I was admitted to the latter. While I was at CMU, I figured out that SAMS is more for students who need a boost in math/science/SAT prep, not those who are strong in those fields.

I took Biology and Sound Recording, which were good, but of course it's the people who are great :) I know that a whole group of students from the Oklahoma School of Sci and Math attended for free also (though the school is competitive to begin with). Your stats are strong; with your essays, I don't see any reason they wouldn't admit you.

Anyway, CMU Pre-College is a very good program, so you've already done the right thing by applying!

if you're good at math/science go for ap/ea. If you haven't had a real opportunity to do high level math/science, do sams.

So would a sophomore taking multi-variable and SAT Math-800 and SAT2 Math-800, be better suited for AP/EA than SAMS? Or does SAMS include more advanced stuff?

^
for someone like that, he probably wouldnt have any math courses at cmu summer any way (or maybe there's diff eq.). you can take a lot more than just math and science in AP/EA, which was a big reason why i went there (i took ethics and java). but the answer to your question, i think, is a yes. sophomore with 800 on SAT II math II and taking multivar will probably over-qualify for SAMS.

definitely overqualified...

AP/EA might be better.

I sent an email to a person in Summer Program for Diversity. The name of this person was Denise LaGamba. She told me that totally 900 people apply to The Summer program of Diversity. From the 900, 100 are picked totally for the whole program itself!

I was thinking 100 was picked separately for each program . . . oh well.

is this program prestigious w/ colleges? jw.

maybe; but who cares? One little summer program probably won't make that much of a difference for getting into like, Harvard or something.

"Hmm, his SAT's are below average...BUT, he did participate in the SAMS, so let's admit him"...

Okay, this is an exaggeration but yeah, I doubt it matters all that much. I'm just doing it cause I want to enjoy my summer away from home learning about the stuff I love...MATH AND SCIENCE!

yeah but there is a correlation: prestigiousness with rigorousness and quality of overall program. if i can decide which program to ultimately go to, i do have to compare them.

bump

10 char (I haven't done this is a while, I usually just do a long line of ellipsis......................)

I only found out about this program today. If I send out my application around April 3rd, would that be too late?? They say they still accept applications, so just wondering.

yeah, probably too late...more than a month; that's pushing it.
