Summer art at Skidmore--a waste?

My DD is a sophomore in high school and looking into a career in art. Her top choice this summer was to attend the Cornell precollege program in either interior design or architecture, but then she found out she has to have completed her junior year. Now she's looking at the five-week studio art program at Skidmore. Her art teacher, who runs an art school that is fairly hardcore, told her that anything other than Cornell or the art school out in Pasadena is "not serious" and is a waste of money. This art teacher places a lot of emphasis on building portfolios that help kids get into Ivy League schools (with the right stats, of course). At this point, my DD probably is not an Ivy League candidate. Anyone do the Skidmore program and find it valuable??? I think half of the benefit for her would be just being away for the first time and living on a college campus.
