Hey everyone. I'm new to the forum and I saw one or two older threads about Stanford's summer program, but both were pretty old and I didn't want to bump them.

Stanford is 8 weeks long and about $10,000 if I took courses worth 8 credits in total. That seems like a lot to me, I was wondering if I could get anyone's opinion on whether or not it's worth it? There are other programs, like Harvard, etc. that are 8 weeks long and a grand or two cheaper.

I'm really looking for a new experience. I live on the east coast, I've never been to California, and all of the other summer programs I've been accepted to are in Boston/New York.

Could anyone tell me about Stanford's dorm life? How strict it is, etc. Also, any information about classes, other activities, and the professors (are they real Stanford professors?) would be greatly appreciated.

Who else got in?? I got accepted to stanford summer college, but i have a feeling that it is not selective at all as I'm not an outstanding student. I just thought I'd give it a try.

The costs is extremely expensive!! around $10,000... do you guys think it's worth it?? Did anyone go in the previous years?? Please give some opinions.

And also, are the instructors REAL stanford professors, or are they just graduates??

replying to post #4, yeah, that's what I think! U can even plan on going to a poor country and do some voluteer work, which would be a lot cheaper than that even then! I see no reason why would one spend that much just to attend a summer program! o_0

seriously -- $10,000 is just too much money to pay for summer at stanford. You could study abroad all summer for less. You could study for SAT tests and work on college application essays and it would have more impact on your chances for admissions to college.

I just opened the "invitation" to apply to this for my D for summer of '08. The course is pricey because you are taking college courses with undergraduate students, so I would assume they are taught by professors for that price. My D is a native Californian but we have lived in TN for the last 8 years. Stanford is her number one choice. I really can't see spending that kind of money unless I can use her college 529 plan to pay for it. That might be something to check on if your parents have ample funds in that account for you.

I'm trying to find out more about the EPGY Summer Institutes program - is it geared (both socially and academically) for a rising senior? It seems as if it might be a bit restrictive with having to be back in the dorm by 10, lights out at 11, asking permission to go to another part of campus, etc. At this age it would be nice to get a feel for what it's like on a college campus. Does anyone have experience with this program? Anyone take the Quantum Mechanics course? If so, how much physics had you taken prior to taking this course...Thanks
