That is the trouble with most summer classes. They are quite often not taught by Cal faculty or graduate students so it is hard to find out much about your instructor. I think last summer Chem 1A was taught by a visiting professor from another school or someone like that. I know that all the summer math classes are taught be grad students.

Not sure about the summer, but these are books/manuals/etc. used during Spring 2009, which they might continue using during the summer: [Search by Course | Buy Textbooks | Ned’s - Berkeley](http://www.nedsbooks.com/ucb/buy_courselisting.asp?mscssid=B93235EC361C4432A0198D4B3B8CFC51)

Ok thanks.

Anyone have any tips or suggestions or anything else on Chem 1a?

I took Chem1A last fall with Stacy &co. It was more difficult than I expected, but the curve at the end of the class was extremely generous.

In order to do well in this course, you must UNDERSTAND the concepts underlying all the equations and phenomena you observe. Go to office hours, email your GSI, do whatever it takes to fully understand what is going on. In my experience, the exams (which compose the greatest part of your grade) are mostly theory-based, and they ask you to apply what you know, rather than regurgitate memorized facts.

Lol is this the same C. Li for chem 1a? the reviews of her aren’t good haha

^ Thanks guys.

I hope she isn’t that bad. Lol accent should be funny.

What is GSI?

GSI stands for Graduate Student Instructor, which kind of like a TA.

Well, if you have a really solid grasp of Chem, Chem 1A is not bad. I was in the same Chem 1A class as AureatEagle but I did not think Chem 1A was hard as my Chem AP class in high school. I think if you can build up a sort of chemistry intuition, you should get by just fine. In other words, if you understand the underlying chemical principles of reactions, it’s all good since chemistry is governed by a couple of basic principles as fars as the course is concerned.

ugh i have no idea how im going to make it to those 8 am lectures. im probably going to sleep in half the time.

Chemistry is my strongest science, because my dad is a Scientist and he has grounded me with Chemistry from an early age. So, I have a good foundation and understanding of the basics.

I got an easy A in my sophomore Hon Chem class, we didn’t have AP. Till now… they supposedly might add AP Chem, which I find out after I sign up for this class… lol. No worries though.

Are the labs easy? Fun? A pain? How much are they worth?

chem is hard here. labs are boring. they are time consuming. they are worth 30%

30%…hm…

Tests I am assuming are like 65%? HW if any 5%?

Much like my Physics class, Labs, 20%, HW 5%. Tests 50% and final 25%. This is the worst class I have ever taken in my life, the subject is very interesting, but challenging. With the right teacher I would have loved this class. But with my current teacher I have come to hate the class, but I still like the subject, hope I get a good teacher in college.

Which is why… I am so stressed for information on this class.

hamburgler and I would like to know what book Chem 1a uses?

When do we need these by? I have gotten no info on the book yet?

I feel a little worried about taking this course. (I’m also taking it this Summer) The reviews from her are conflicting. Apparently, she has really good reviews from Cal students, but horrible reviews from States Students in Austin.

For the book, it’s right here:

crap i think i bought the wrong lab manual… and i spent 40 bucks on it… DDDDDD:
