Summer Courses--LEAP and others

How quickly do prides usually fill up??? Are some more popular than others???

PS, on the prides for times, it says the time of the class and then “MTWRF” … what is the “R” ???

Thursday (as to not confuse it with Tuesday/T)

Thanks!

My daughter was able to register for the Bio Behavioral Health Leap Pride today. One more step down! Now, just to find a roommate!

My son also registered for LEAP with no issues at all (I think he actually received confirmation before the 5 pm starting time). He went with the more traditional Speech and Writing and is getting two of the basics out of the way.

Same here Bruce with the registration time. She put in her stuff about 10 till 5 and surprisingly was able to register. It seemed almost too easy! We kept going back to make sure she was actually registered. She’s probably going to major in Bio Behavioral Health, so she was happy to get this pride.

yeah it sounded like the most useful and interesting one to me for that same reason

my daughter registered for the mass media LEAP on Tuesday at 5… since DUS wanted to start exploring different subjects and still get GenEd classes. No problems registering either.

For LEAP, should I get Rhetoric and Composition or Effective Speech A over with??? I know I’ll have to take them both, but which is more painful and should I get over with first? PS I’m doing the Mass Media and Society LEAP Pride. Thanks!

@Tooth1010 Did you register yet? If you haven’t, you may not have a choice depending on what’s open.

English 015 is a lot of writing and in a summer class it seems to me that you would have less writing to do than in a regular full semester class because of limited time. Also, the writing help areas may not be as crowded in the summer. I found them both pretty painful when I went to PSU a million years ago - but depending on what you like to do better (writing or speaking publicly) it can determine which is less painful to you. I am a good writer and would rather write 100 papers than speak in front of a class, so for me, English 015 was less painful.

Another thing to think about : summer classes cover exactly the same stuff, only in less time. So I wouldn’t bet you will be writing less. OTOH, your LEAP pride will be 24 people you know and have to give the speech to, instead of a room of total strangers.

How are the speech classes and the writing classes? What are they like? Anyone want to share your experience in these classes? I’m thinking about taking the writing class because I get REALLY nervous when it comes to public speaking! Any suggestions??

On my application, I said that I want to be considered for the summer session. Does this mean I HAVE to attend if I get accepted to summer and not the fall semester?

@nuteller707 Yes, you have to start in the summer if you want to attend UP.

@jlhpsu did your daughter like the LEAP program? I just got accepted for summer and I’m interested in doing the program but I’m kind of iffy about it.

Yes, she liked it. All of the same people were in her two classes so she got to know people. I’d recommend it.

@Sunrise97 My son took English and Public Speaking during LEAP in the summer and he thought it was much bette to give speeches to the smaller number of students in the summer course, plus they are all freshman so less intimidating. My daughter actually found a community college and took it there in the summer so that is another option. I think it was nice for him to get ENG and CAS over with in the summer so I would suggest it, as would he.

What’s the difference between the two English classes offered with LEAP? I believe they are rhetoric and effective speech, but that could be wrong.

@jlhpsu did your daughter also have to do a public speaking class? that sounds like it’s gonna suck
