Penn State summer session?

Hey, guys!

So, I didn't make it to their School of Nursing (which is definitely okay because I'm not sure if I really wanted to do that), but they gave me a chance to change my majors and stuff so I picked the Division of Undergraduate Studies at University Park. I emailed them and they asked me if I was okay with starting over the summer.

I heard a lot of good things about their summer sessions and I don't mind starting a week after high school, actually.
But does this summer session guarantee a fall admission?
And can you guys tell me more about it?

Also, what's this LEAP thing a lot of people has been telling me about?

Thanks in advance! And I'm sorry if there's already a thread about this. I tried looking for one, but it's hard on the app.

Yes it does and I’ve known several people who did that because that was the only way they could go to main campus. Good opportunity to get familiar with campus and college before the rest of the freshman arrive but you miss out on working (probably) and hanging out with friends while you’re there.

Thanks so much @NJmom2017!

Bump-
Can anyone who has experienced the summer session/LEAP program tell me what to expect/what it’s going to be like?

Summer term is a regular PSU term. Students take classes and there’s a graduation ceremony at the end, it’s the real deal and if you’ve been admitted for summer you are a bona fide Penn Stater. LEAP is a program for freshmen. You take a pair of classes that you choose from the LEAP guide. The classes knock off a couple requirements and since the same people are in both classes, you make some friends with interest similar to yours. There are some social activities and orientation things to do, plus LEAPers live in the same residence halls, with an upperclass mentor. I would very highly recommend LEAP. The only people I know who didn’t enjoy it were those who weren’t interested in new connections…even my introvert student had a positive experience and made some lasting friendships.

Ahh, thanks so much for this information! I really appreciate it!

Bump- anyone else who’d like to add something?

Thanks!

Can any freshman choose to do LEAP or is it by invite only?

Any incoming freshman can do LEAP. Fall admits can even choose to come instead for summer session to do LEAP, but they have to wait until the summer admits have chosen their classes first. And summer admits don’t have to do LEAP, but most of them do (but not all).

I was admitted for Fall 2013, but I wanted to do the Summer LEAP. I called Admissions and they changed my Admit to Summer, so I can register for Leap along with summer admits.

I have heard only good things from students who have done LEAP – that it is a great experience, lots of fun, and Happy Valley is a good place to be in the summer.

If you do the summer session do you still go to college for the fall/spring semesters? or is it just a summer/fall semester?

Thanks for all the responses, guys! I really do appreciate it! I’m definitely going to do LEAP.

@133320 I e-mailed them about that and here’s what they replied:
“Students who begin in the Summer Session at University Park, come back for Fall semester and can complete all four years at University Park.”
So, yeah, you could do fall/spring sessions. :)

My older son did LEAP and liked it. My second son intended to do it but the “pride” (pair of classes you sign up for) he signed up for was later canceled and by that time there were no other ones available that he was interested in or eligible for. So you do have to keep in mind that sometimes the prides do get canceled for various reasons.

And yes, if you do summer, you still have to do fall and spring. If you didn’t do both, you wouldn’t be on track creditwise (unless you took a full-time courseload in summer, which most people don’t). Meaning, if you skipped fall or spring semester, you wouldn’t have enough credits to be considered a sophomore at the start of the next year, and would have to take extra credits to catch up.

Does the LEAP program fill up quickly? Because I want to see how much money in aid I get first before I apply and that’s not until March…

What email address is it that you used to email the office of undergraduate admissions?
