Hi all,

I'm taking a gap year but I want to take online courses over the summer so that I'll be more prepared for college.

Problem is online high schools (like Florida Virtual and Apex) won't take me because of my diploma. I can't enroll at CC because that would break my gap year agreement.

I was sick throughout high school but managed to graduate with the bare minimum requirements and feel that supplementary courses would help me.

I'm also reapplying to a reach college I was waitlisted/rejected next fall, which is why I'm looking for an accredited program rather than using free online courses.

Does anyone know of an online high school that accepts "post-graduates" or any other similar program? Any help is much appreciated!!

If your goal was simply to better prepare yourself for the college to which you’ve been accepted, I’d recommend a rigorous program of self-study. Not only the knowledge gained but also development of the self-discipline and time management skills a real self-study program requires would be very valuable to you in college.

But if your goal is to reapply to another college and need some real credits to boost your chances, then you need to take some college courses.

Since that’s exactly what you’ve promised you won’t do, it seems to me that the goals are incompatible and that you need to choose between them.

If I took college courses, wouldn’t that make me a non-freshman transfer student to the college I hope to apply? I’m currently accepted at a target/safety school. I would have to withdraw my deferment and enroll at the local CC, which is risking a lot just to try for my reach again as a transfer applicant… Surely there must be another way?

Ideally I’m looking for AP and Honors courses. Self-study is not a problem, I actually prefer it and am looking for online courses only. I’m hoping to find a way to “prove” I studied a course. Maybe I should self-study and take a Subject test?

I’m thinking that in college admissions, colleges wouldn’t accept a “self-studied” course, especially because I can’t take the AP to back up my claim since I’m applying in this coming Fall and the tests are only in May. The weakest part of my application was the rigor of my courses because of my health so I was hoping to show I could handle AP level courses by taking some over the summer.

Oh, and by the way thank you so much for replying! I was starting to think I would be ignored. Your comments are much appreciated. :)

What can a Gap Year student do to improve their academic profile while waiting to reapply??

No, you wouldn’t get CREDIT for self-study; but if I’m understanding you properly, your problem is that your agreement with the school that admitted you precludes doing college work for credit.
