So I'm enrolling for summer classes and I really need to take 6BL over the summer. Its only offered for the first session and its almost full already. I dont register for another 2 days (Thursday at 1). Do you guys know if they usually open up more sections or do I just have to waitlist it? Also, if I have to waitlist it, do people usually drop 6BL (either at all or as much as they do during the regular school year)?

What I’m thinking is that with HUM they just found more TA’s and classrooms and everyone had a chance to take the class. With a lab would classroom space be a lot more limited, so not as easy to add sections?

In the summer, there are always more lab rooms than students interested. Just look at the number of sections offered in the fall and compare that to the # added in the summer. It’s about $5000 to hire a TA for the summer (or it was when I was doing it), so you’d better rake in something similar with student tuition.

Can anyone explain why the upper division biology classes are so popular in the summer?
Some classes have class size of 200 and waitlist of almost 200. 200+200 is more than half the number of students admitted to biological sciences each year. Even more confounding is the fact that UCSD 4-year graduation rate is less than 60%.

(1) You don’t need to be a biology major to register for many of the UD courses. I registered for a few, and I was a chem major.
(2) Lots of non-UCSD students need these as med/dental/whatever professional school prerequisites, and with SD being a large city, you have lots of kids home for the summer and looking to get stuff out of the way. Their own colleges may not offer these classes during the school year.

How much does the waitlist move for summer courses? All the classes I need to take are already waitlisted up to 30 people, with BL waitlisted in the hundreds.

(1) To annoy people like yourself, of course. I also liked to register for my full 19.5 units and sit on the decision for a few weeks, knowing full well that there are people desperate to get into the courses.

When do they blink? (No new sections have been added to date.) Is it true that adds are not assigned by position on waitlist, but by who grabs the new spots first?
