Summer Honors Invitational Program

Ds got an invite to this. Anyone heard of it? Is it worth the trip?

Kinda depends. I’m going to be a freshman at A&M in the fall, and I didn’t really care much for the SHIP. To me it seemed more like a general overnight college visit than an “honors” anything-- it seems like most of the time was spent learning about the campus culture, there was a “yell practice” on the football field, we watched the Aggie Wranglers (that’s what they’re called right? :X) dance, hung out at the gym at night. There was a presentation on scholarships, as well as a general tour of a particular college of your choosing, but overall I didn’t get much out of it in terms of info. on the academics.

If your son is considering A&M for their large scholarships they give to national merit finalists, I suggest waiting until one of their national merit scholar events, either in your nearest city (I attended one in Dallas in… late '08? i think) or on campus (went to another program there in January I believe.) Definitely learned a lot more about the honors program/scholarships/my particular department etc. there.

That said, SHIP was fun (for most people, wasn’t my cup of tea), and your son should definitely consider going if he’s interested in seeing what campus is like.

There do seem to be so many events that I’m trying to figure out which one to make. We haven’t visited the campus at all, officially. He’s an Eagle Scout, and I see there’s a Corps event for Eagles. Plus, I wonder whether there is a diversity-focused event as well. He’s just warming to the idea of A&M so I don’t want to get scared off!
