has anyone done it (especially if you now go to barnard) or is anyone doing it this year? i just got in for this summer, and I couldn’t be more excited. i’d love to hear anecdotes/stories/opinions of the program!!
I did it last summer and it was amazing! I took Architecture and Psychology of the Media and they were both great classes. I met so many smart and talented young women that I still talk to today. The program wasn’t necessarily the most intense, there was one day I stayed up super late to finish the two final assignments, but I did find the classes interesting and learn new material. Overall, I really enjoyed the program and thought it was a good balance of work and fun! I applied to Barnard this year, ED, and was deferred but hopefully I’ll get in regular. Doing this program doesn’t increase your chances of admission but what the professors and your RAs say does hold weight with the admission counselors. I had a great time and I bet you will too, have fun!
bump?
My daughter did YWLI and loved it and then went to Barnard and she was an RA for the program one summer too! Have fun!
bump again! i really want to start a facebook group but can’t create a group without adding any members
I’m doing it this summer! I’m taking human rights history and American political communication.
@natdue I applied this year and picked Psychology of Media as one of my classes. How was the class? Was it really difficult?
This is a super late reply, haven’t been on here since college decisions are done. Anyways, the class was great, it was educational and fun, I really loved the professor as well, Dr. Jamie Krenn if I remember right. I don’t think any of the classes were too difficult, you’re learning of course but they also want you to have fun. There is a final paper that I think was supposed to be 10 pages long, but you’re given plenty of things to talk about. There was also a final presentation to do in groups of three and four. All of the work is very manageable, there’s also readings that are almost daily, but again it’s not too much. As long as your manage your time, you’ll have plenty of time to hang out with friends, explore the city, and go on excursions! Have fun!
@natdue Thank you so much! It really helped!
Ello I did the Liberal Arts Intensive last summer. It was the best experience of my life as I met dozens of girls from all over the world (my roommate came from Switzerland and had the coolest clothes, snacks, and shampoo.) Much like the Summer in the City Program, the Intensive offers you as much freedom as possible. Yeah you have classes, but it’s not like your dorm is the only place to do homework. If you’re daring, much like me, you’d take the subway all over town and find the Starbucks with the most comfortable chairs.
Aside from the independence you’re granted here in NYC and while at Barnard, it’s important to consider the credibility of Barnard administration. The professors, RAs, and other staff members are extremely welcoming. The students here are expressive, very intelligent, and dedicated to their work. Of course, I was only here for one week (the Intensive is one-week and MUCH more affordable than other Barnard precollege programs) but I live in NJ and it’s a 20 minute commute to NYC, so sometimes I visit Barnard and talk to current students.
Enjoy yourself during the 4-week program. Take advantage of all the cool stores, the time you have to explore (but most importantly the time you need to study) and get as much information as possible from current students. If you have any questions about my experience at the program, ask me!
