I want to apply for and do an internship this summer. I want to do it preferably in Biology, but English is okay, too. Where should I look to find internships that suit my interests? My goal is to gain admittance into universities such as UCLA and Berkeley.

Qualities I'm looking for:
- reasonably prestigious
- need to apply to get in
- do real work (Last summer I did a "medical" internship that involved helping the company move boxes.)

My relevant Attributes:
- took AP bio last year as a Sophomore. 5 on the AP Bio test. 790 on the SAT II, As both semesters
- GPA: 3.875 unweighted (inclu. freshman year)

What internships should I aim for? Thanks a lot.

Very honestly, there are few real internships for high school students except ones that students have to pay to work. You can find such internships via Google. There also are a very few internships for high school students in the sciences – at NASA, I believe – that you also can find via Google, though it’s likely the deadline has passed.

There aren’t real internships for virtually any high school students because most high school students lack the skills and work experience to do real internships, and it’s expensive to offer internships for inexperienced students. What costs is not only paying the students, but paying people to take time away from work to supervise students who’re doing something that an experienced person could easily do without supervision.

Often “internships” that are offered to high school students offer the kind of grunt work you did last year. Instead of advertising such work as “summer laborer job”, the companies figure they’ll get a higher caliber of employee by calling such work an “internship.”

Northstarmom, I’m not sure how true that is. I’ve been able to find some amazing internships in technology companies – as a high school student. I was put in charge of an entire new release of software and also ended up getting paid because they liked my work so much. Of course, this might very well be pertinent only to technology: I have advanced programming knowledge. But don’t say there are no real internships for high school students.

I’d look into internships in technology or politics if those interest you.

I didn’t say there are “no” real internships for high school students. I said there are “few” such internships. Older S, 25, before his senior in high school did an out of state paid one-month internship as a reporter for a daily newspaper. He was assigned stories, got about 20 stories published including 2 that were on the front page. However, he was unusual in that he had been a published journalist – including for a national children’s magazine, a local weekly newspaper, and as a sports writer freelancer (starting at age 15) for several of our state’s largest newspaper – since he was in elementary school.

He was the first high school student the paper had ever hired. The next youngest intern that summer there was a rising college senior.

I imagine that kameronsmith had to have had some impressive technology skills – far beyond what’s typical for high school students-- to land the kind of internship described in post #3. That’s going to be what’s required for virtually all of the rare real paid internships available for high school students. Simply wishing to get experience in a field, and having high grades aren’t likely to be enough to get such a position.

There are a lot of medical related internship opportunities for rising seniors especially the ones with good academic record, the place to ask is over the “Summer Programs” board. Unfortunately, the deadlines for these programs have passed. Take a look at the list below, may be there are a few that are still open.
