I'm currently a junior at the University of Arkansas who was accepted this Thursday for a summer internship at Michigan State, and I am SO excited! The work sounds fantastic (researching plants and plant genomics) and will help me make decisions regarding grad school.

If you're a current student there, or an alum of this great university, would you mind letting me know your favorite things about the school and community please? I'm really looking forward to being a summer Spartan. Thanks for your answers! Go, Sparty!

I love my residential college (RCAH), the study abroad opportunities, and the proximity to Lansing (which has landed me an internship with a senator, a well paying government job, and another job that I’m passionate about).

Sorry, can’t pick just one thing lol.

Thanks for your input, romanigypsyeyes! Glad to hear your time there was so productive. Anywhere I should put on my must-see list? How about on the “do not leave campus without doing…” list? Where did you study abroad?

Hi! As romani said, super hard to just pick a couple things that I love about MSU/the community (I’m a current senior). I love going to MSU football/basketball games, walks along the Red Cedar (river running through campus), my residential college (JMC) among others.

The summer in East Lansing is pretty chill from what I’ve heard. Most college students are gone from campus so it is a lot quieter than usual with more East lansing family residents around/lots of summer camps with younger kids but there is still plenty to do for college students revolving mostly around jobs, outdoorsy things, and partying. There are quite a few cool cultural things to do in East Lansing itself (I seem to remember art/jazz/folk festivals if you are into that type of stuff). The neighboring areas of Lansing/Okemos also have stuff going on throughout the summer- Lansing lugnuts games are pretty fun to go to if you like baseball at all, and Lake Lansing I’ve heard is nice to go to on a hot summer day. If you are into concerts Mac’s bar or the loft Lansing bring in some decent acts.

I love the Red Cedar and nature areas around campus.

I love animals so the farms, particularly the horse farm is awesome. If you go there in like mid-June you can see the foals there too. So cute. Also there are a lot of live stock/animal shows at the Pavilion.

The Arts Festival (Late May I think) is really cool even if you don’t like art. There are so many different things there and a lot of it is really neat. I didn’t think the Folk Festival was that great though.

Summer is really chill, East Lansing is basically dead. I like it though, there are a lot of nice spots to hang out on campus and just study or read. Since I take classes this is nice.

Wow, thanks for the great ideas! I get up there at the end of May and stay until the end of July, so I will definitely check out your suggestions. Summer can’t come soon enough!
