Hi, I'm currently a junior in high school and i'm interested in pursuing a medical career in the future. I was hoping that perhaps a medical or any other internship that deals with science would help me gain familiarity with the health care field. I've browsed the internet numerous times but i cannot seem to find any internships for high school students in New Jersey. I would really appreciate it if you guys can help me out and point me in the right direction.

waht state? i can only help u if its califnora

I'm a humanities person, so I don't know much about science internships, but if you are having trouble finding established internships, look for them on your own. Find businesses or companies that deal with your interest and see if they are in need of any assistance over the summer. I don't know if you want to be paid or not, but if not, mention to them that you are willing to volunteer and that you are considering ___________ as a potential career and wonder if you can help out to get a feel for that career. I did this after applying and being rejected from several paid high school internships (as well as normal summer jobs -_-) and I found a great volunteer position at a small nonprofit that deals with my interest (Russia!). I want to do work in a nonprofit when I am older, so it was very eye-opening to see how the company was run. It was very small, so I established some nice friendships with my coworkers and it was nice to talk to professionals who shared my interests. Also, they said they might be able to offer me a paid job this summer, so I might get a really great paid internship before I start college.

Basically, be proactive. If you can't get a prestigious internship, look a level down. The fact that you have taken the initiative will look good, at least to your employers and you may establish connections that will be useful later. My final recommendation is to look at companies that are advertising for paid interns. Chances are, they need the extra help and may have some tasks that do not require a hs degree for you to do so they can assign the paid interns to more important work that is piling up.

I think he/she's looking in Jersey...

The only summer program I've seemed to find was a seminar run by Johns Hopkins, and that's not New Jersey. Otherwise, my most logical suggestion would be to contact your local Hospital. They're always looking for volunteers, whether it be for nursing, radiology, patient transportation, etc. I volunteer in Physical Therapy, and I find it just absolutely amazing. You get to have hands-on contact with patients, and, if you're lucky, professionals in the field will really give you pointers.

As for "internships" I doubt you'd be offered anything in the medical field simply based on your age. If you're really interested, contact some companies yourself. They'd be impressed in you taking initiative, and possibly use your help.

You could always ask to shadow a doctor and see what they do; you won't be doing too much, but you will gain some experience nevertheless. I plan to do so this summer.

You know, prestige and institution aren't everything. I doubt colleges won't look favorably on devotion to your community.

As such, check out local free clinics and rescue squads. Many often have programs for high school juniors and above which aren't too picky, though some can be a little time consuming. As an added bonus, not only do these demonstrate an interest in the medical field (when added with shadowing), but also show that you can keep a cool head and count as community service hours. You'll also probably work in a more personal way with the volunteers and learn a more pragmatic set of skills - I'm willing to be that someone'd be willing to write you a good letter of rec when the time comes.

Think outside the box. If one opportunity doesn't exist, find some other ones.

Sorry, this isn't really helful to the thread starter...but I'm from Cali and looking for the same thing
