I know that it’s November and it’s super early, but lately I’ve been thinking about getting a summer job. I need to work, but I have only refereed in the past, so I don’t haven;t secured a summer job yet. Since I’m a freshman engineering student, this is probably my last summer before I should be doing internships instead of menial, minimum wage jobs. So I want to make the most of this experience.
I don’t want to stay at home, and ideally I’d get to go out west or somewhere far from home (which is upstate NY). I love hiking and the outdoors, so it’d be cool to work near a national park. I’ve looked into working as a camp counselor and applied at a couple hotels near Acadia National Park, but I haven’t gotten called back yet.
Does anyone have any cool summer job experiences or suggestions? I’d be willing to go almost anywhere, as long as the employer provides some sort of employee housing (mandated by my mom) and I would make enough to pay for transportation to the job and still profit over the course of the summer. Thanks
Have you looked into being a summer camp counselor at a sleep-away camp? It’s not a great wage but it will be in a great natural environment with housing as part of your job.
I worked for a private concessionaire in Yellowstone National Park and lived in the company dorms. My coworkers came from all over the world. You can PM me for more details.
If you’re looking for more outdoor jobs, you might want to look at Coolworks.com. Plenty of resorts and other seasonal employers post jobs there and most specify if housing is provided.
Here’s the SCA young adult opportunities. They update the internship list fairly constantly so keep checking back. Also look at the “hot” listings. They need people there. http://www.thesca.org/serve/young-adult-programs
I remember going to Mackinac Island recently, and businesses on the island host a lot of college students. It’s an island between the peninsulas of Michigan, so it might not be far enough away from home for you. But they have all kinds of jobs from tour guides to hotel and restaurant staff and they have housing included too.
I wound up working as a Cafeteria Cook for Xanterra in Yellowstone NP. I had the time of my life!
Just figured I’d update the thread in case anyone is searching for a Xanterra employee. I found a girl on CC who worked for Xanterra in Yellowstone the year before me and she answered a lot of my questions.
SO, if you’re reading this and considering taking a job with Xanterra, I’d be happy to answer any questions, just message me!!
