I'm definitely going to Rice this fall, and I'm more than sure that I won't be leaving Houston in the summer, because my mom is across the Pacific and most of my family is a continent away. I'm more than sure I'm not the first one with this problem, so could someone please enlighten me on their summer experience at Rice. I'm obviously going to have to be making money, so could anyone please share some of their summer working experiences/tips with me. I'd also like to know how much the school charges for room and board over the summer. Did any fishies get to go on a school-sponsored research trip somewhere over the summer? If so, please share.

I’m also interested in learning this because after my sophomore year I would like to stay in Houston to continue to do research at the TMC.

You can live on campus over the summer if you are enrolled for the fall (about $580 month), but there are LOTS of summer sublets in apartments and houses right around Rice. There are also sometimes garage apartments that you can live in in exchange for minimal childcare or yardwork, etc. There are jobs on campus and also lots of internships. Plenty of kids stay in Houston over the summer. (DS will be there this summer, too, along with some of his roommates.) There are listings in the Rice online housing guide, also craigslist. Also, some local landlords just put little signs in their yards, since they know that local students will be in the area to find places.
DS will be going to another state with his Prof for some specialized training this summer, though he is a soph. I don’t think it would be difficult to do as a freshman. DD went to Nicaragua with Engineering-without-borders one summer. There are lots of summer opportunities in Houston and at Rice.

= D anxiousmom, you have a way of cheering me up

anxiousmom, I would be very interested in doing something like your daughter in engineering without borders or doctors without borders. Did she have to pay to attend?
When I went to Africa, I had to pay over $3000. I think that it was well worth it but I could easily continue to help out around the community instead.

EWB normally pays for most of it as far I know.

Rice paid for travel and lodging, if I remember correctly. I think the students pitched in a very small amount for food…

Do we have to clear our rooms during summer? Like practically moving every piece of paper out…

yes. Rice rents out the dorms over the summer/does rotational maintenance on them. Everything must be cleared out 2 days after graduation.

I actually work for the administration as well, so its my job to ensure that it happens…

Some of the res colleges have summer storage. DS left couch, etc over the summer in the basement.

that is true. It is not guaranteed to be safe. There is normally some basement space to store couches etc. However they can flood and get wrecked, so dont store anything valuable there.
