Just curious as to what typically happens to those who stay at MIT during the summer to work on UROPs, etc.

Food-wise, do most students purchase the summer meal plan (Summer 2012 Block Meal Plan Program | MIT Campus Dining) or purchase meals individually?

Are there on-campus events for students to attend? Are libraries and other facilities open as they are throughout the school year?

I'm looking for a bit of information on "summer life at MIT". Thank you in advance!

^ You can find much less expensive housing in one of the fraternities over the summer. My daughter and several other female friends from MIT rented rooms in ZBT, a fraternity across the river in Boston. They cooked their own meals and the over all cost of room and board was significantly below what they would have paid on campus. The libraries and sports facilities are open during the summer.

Most students won’t be eating in dining at all. There are plenty of other cheaper options. Cooking for yourself would be significantly cheaper. I haven’t looked at the summer prices, but if it’s anything like IAP even eating out at pretty nice places would cost the same or less and you’d get better food.

Summer is pretty quiet at MIT in terms of residential life, since most undergrads are either living at fraternities/ILGs, or else are working somewhere other than Boston for the summer. But academic life is still going strong – the grad students, postdocs, and professors at MIT don’t get the summer off, so there are still plenty of people around.

My friends and I lived in the dorms and cooked for ourselves during the summer. We had a lot more time to cook, not to mention that we had a much easier time getting to the grocery store than during the semester. We also did a lot more outside the city on the weekends, like driving to water parks or mini golf courses.

Thanks for the responses everybody!

I do cook a lot, so that is definitely a viable option.

Now – just to wait until that Chipotle opens in Kendall Square in a few weeks!

Do you guys know any summer programs worth doing at MIT? For high school students (besides RSI&MITES)

If you are local, ESP Junction is something you may want to consider; however, it is not an all-day event (only 5-9PM Mon-Thurs).

There is also the Women’s Technology Program (WTP), though that is highly selective like RSI, only choosing 60 participants for the four-week program.

Do you know how good ESP is? I’ve looked over it but it seems like it is not “that” extremely challenging… But rather a fun program to do

Unfortunately, I haven’t done any of the ESP courses, so I’m not sure.

I think that is the general idea though, but I believe Junction is rather in-depth relatively.
