@helpingthekid73 Did your son do both? Can you share his experience?
Also, is it true that if you attend BUTI summer program, you can “skip” BU’s pre-screening audition?

The wind ensemble has the same instrumentation as a band….no strings. The orchestra has strings…lots of them…and less woodwinds and brass than the wind ensemble.
The applied instrument faculty on the instruments is the same. But the conductors of the ensembles are not the same.
Does that make sense?
My kid (a number of years ago) did the trumpet workshop followed by the Wind Ensemble. He did that for two years. And loved it.
so interesting that she got into orchestra before wind ensemble. I think it’s usually the opposite! Big congrats! it’s a fantastic program. my D22 was supposed to go summer of 2020…she’s headed to college in fall so might not want such a long program. we shall see!
@thumper1 I know the basic difference, thank you!
Looking for the BUTI context and details.
Did you feel the instrument intensive was rigorous? Appreciate your sharing your son’s experience!
My S did not do BUTI, this is his first year applying to programs, he is only in 10th grade. His teacher suggested not applying to flute intensive since it was a flute only experience, and she thought it was not the best experience for him. She was very eager for him to apply to either the orchestra or wind ensemble and thought those were fantastic experiences for flutists, she went when she was a teen. He decided not to apply to BUTI after a lot of thought and is concentrating on the camp like chamber music programs.
My son did the trumpet workshop only the first year he went to Tanglewood. He didn’t do it the second year. He felt it was very good, and was well run. It focused only on that instrument. Plus it got him into the routine and expectations for his BUTI experience.
He thought it was well worth it…but YMMV.
Did anyone hear from Bowdoin? D got acceptance from Summer at Eastman Classical studies for piano yesterday, but we are still waiting for Bowdoin.
They are the only summer camps D applied. Any thoughts on both programs?
I participated in the Eastman Summer Classical Studies the past two years d really enjoyed it! The community at Eastman is just fantastic, and the teachers are amazing! Typically two lessons a week, along with theory, aural skills, topical classes that you pick, and more! It’s wonderful.
Thank you so much for your feedback. Do you know if they can pick up students from the airport? My 16 year old will likely travel by herself via air.
I’m not sure, I participated virtually the past two years, but I would just contact them to ask. They are very helpful!
I will check with my son. I think he applied to Bowdoin.
thank you so much…
This is what I learned. He did not hear anything but he is hoping to hear next week. His friends told him first week of March they inform the students. Fingers crossed.
i think bowdoin is usually march for decisions!
We are still looking for possible June options for Flute Intensives, Woodwind, Chamber or Orchestral programs. Our public school calendar here in GA is not in sync with the most of the country, sadly. School year ends in May and starts first week of August.
I came across this list and wanted to share:

This is great info. Thank you so much. Fingers crossed for good news…
Great list! (Glad to see Walden School on there, our favorite but a little different than most.)
Looking for backup programs in case the main applications dont work out. Has anyone sent a young just 16 year old to Aria Academy?
Decisions are out for Brevard summer program acceptance and scholarships, and BUTI sent their scholarship decisions out for Tanglewood today!
Congrats I hope!!!
