Summer Orientation

So I just committed to UCF starting in summer B. Can someone tell me when the orientation dates are and also which one would be best to attend? Also, I heard something about an introduction to college studying course that they offer for freshman in the summer, does anybody know what this class is called and what it entails? Thanks.

The only info I have handy is orientation about Summer B:

Information for the Summer Orientation is now available. Registration will begin the week of February 9th.

Travel arrangements should be made only after you have received your confirmation packet from Orientation Services.

If you have not paid the enrollment deposit of $200 and submitted the enrollment deposit form, you will not be able to register for Orientation.

I think that you are referring to the class SLS 1501, Strategies for Success in College. You will be able to register for it during orientation, when you register for your summer and fall classes. I know some kids who took it and found it useful but my own D refused saying that she has had her fill of study skills classes.

The Summer Orientation dates of May 27-28 Wednesday-Thursday are now full.

June 15-16 Summer Orientation Monday-Tuesday General (CLOSED - NO EXCEPTIONS), LEAD Scholars, Bilingual Family Session*

Thanks to everyone who’s suggested that we be prepared for orientation by figuring out the requirements and classes available before getting there. And rate my professors website is really useful, too.

Will we register for fall classes during the summer orientation, too?

Yes, you will register for both Summer and Fall during Summer orientation.

Hey there, introduction course for freshman that you are talking about is SLS (Student Life Skills). In the class you go further into detail about study habits, time management, but also you get an introduction to many of the services that UCF has, which is helpful for freshman. You also get a peer mentor in the class. I definitely suggest you think about taking the class.

How often does this class meet?

The class meets either MWF or TTh. It’s still a 3 credit hour course.

For those who will be starting at UCF in the summer: what classes do you plan to take? There is a limited selection, and there is nothing that I exactly want to take.

For the Gen. Ed. Requirements I could take Cinema Survey, Western Civilization or Intro to Philosophy. However, these are not the type of classes I wanted to start college with since these do not interest me.

My daughter is going to try for the Cinema Survey class. Instead of taking an ENC class with it she’s thinking of taking an Introductory class (3 credits) designed for her major that she is required to take in the Fall. That way it balances her Summer term with an interesting class.

The only ENC class offered during the summer is ENC 1102, so unless your daughted opted out of ENC 1101, she would have to wait until fall anyways.

I was thinking about taking Cinema Survey as well, since it can be used for a Gen. Ed. class, but I am not sure if I want to be graded on movies. I think that would take the fun out of watching the movies.

I am a math/science person, so history and subjects like this are not appealing to me. It is hard to choose since there is just a small number of courses to choose from.

Why do you say that ENC 1101 isn’t given for summer? They may just be holding all the sections closed until Orientation registration (at least they did this last year). Did you call and confirm that they cut ENC 1101 this summer?

My daughter took AMH 2010 last summer with MacDonald. The professor was a very sweet older lady and my daughter, who hates history, liked the course and got an A.

seinclan - I assumed that if it wasn’t on myUCF catalog then it is not offered. Is that not how it works? Please inform me if I am wrong. I would love it if Pre-Calc is offered over summer B, but it is not in the Summer 2009 catalog.

I saw Precal in the summer catalog…but it was already filled. :(

knightforum, ENC 1101 for Summer B is listed, you need to uncheck the box that says “Show Open Classes Only”. I’m assuming that they are showing “full” now but will open up during Orientation.

D never received a catalog, how can she obtain one?
