I can’t talk definitely about breaking the bank, but will say that the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) had an excellent pre-college program that my daughter really benefited from. She attended two summers. Several of her creations were later included in her portfolio. The first summer she emphasized 2-D; the second summer, 3-D. Better than any program or course she had available near home. She was subsequently admitted to RISD, CMU, MICA, and other art programs.

@mackinaw - sounds like a great program. I’d say anything in the multiple thousands (at least in my house) is considered breaking the bank. We’ve already broken the bank on other opportunities so this summer we are sticking to a much lower budget. It’s been extremely hard finding any pre-college program for under 1K.

Define “breaking the bank” - Is it not wanting to put the money into it such as in post #2 or is your family low income and looking for programs that give financial aid?

What are your priorities? Exposure to what a life on a campus is like, life on a particular campus, independence skills, career exploration?

@“Snowball City” – “breaking the bank” – any program that costs several thousands of dollars for only 1 week - I’ve seen some that are $3K for one week! We “broke the bank” for D20’s service learning trip to the Dom Rep last summer - but it was dual purpose in providing a great experience, community service and Girl Scout Gold Award project. S20 chose expensive travel sports league life and going to multiple soccer college ID camps. We are also “breaking the bank” to send D20 on school choir trip to Iceland end of March - I’d have said no, but when majority of kids are all going, that’s very hard to do.

Low income does not apply but we are far from rich and needing to save for S20 and D20 college tuition.

In the past I have compiled programs. Here is a link to a now closed thread from a year and a half ago

It skews to minority and low income students but not exclusively. I did not update it this past winter.
