how many people audition, and how many are usually accepted??

i believe there are maybe around 175 to 200 applications. Not sure how many acceptances they give to yield the number they want in the program. I believe there were like 40 in the program when D attended in 2007.

Since the deadline for the application was April 1, I am assuming that those individuals who submitted early December/January would be among the first to have been notified, if they felt you were qualified.
It sounds like they review for whether or not you were qualified, after that then notify based on the date you sent it in? So for those individuals who sent it in during Mid-March, they may be put on a wait list? Does this sound accurate?

I’m not sure about notification dates vs. application submission. D sent in audition dvd quite late (March 27th) and was just notified Friday, April 17th, of her acceptance via email.

For those who have D or S who have done this program at Steinhardt, do you know how many of the summer applicants are junior or seniors in high school? Are there college aged students as well?

I’m going this summer and I’m just about to finish my freshman year of college, I’ve talked to a few others going as well and some are still in high school (most are going to be seniors, or are seniors this year) but others are also still in college.

I heard from a source that attending this summer program greatly increases your chances of getting into the school for musical theatre, is this true? The source even said that every kid who attended this camp got into the school.

Your source is wrong. You have the opportunity to get to know NYU’s faculty and they, in turn, will get to know you. If they believe you are talented, obviously it can’t hurt when you apply and audition. However, your admission to NYU is based on meeting NYU’s academic standards for admissions. If you cannot make it through admissions based on your grades and SAT’s you will not make it into NYU even if you do well in the summer program based on talent. D is a current freshman and attended the summer program. Many of the attendees of the summer program who applied to NYU did not make it in as undergrads.

I sent in my application before the deadline but not a video. I changed my mind and decided I didn’t want to audition… but then I changed my mind again. Do you think that they’ll still accept my video? The website does say “Applications are accepted after the deadline on a space available basis.”

Just curious. Either way, I’m calling Steinhardt tomorrow.

Just received the schedule for the summer program today and it is amazing! The kids are going to two Broadway shows, Shakespeare in the Park, Metropolitan Opera in the Park, to the first ever National High School Musical Theater Awards show, and much more.

I’m currently a junior in high school and I’m very interested in the Steinhardt summer musical theatre program. I was just wondering if the students were ever allowed to leave the dorms and campus to travel throughout the city by themselves or if they could only go with faculty members.

As long as you have time off, you are free to travel around the city by yourself. If you are under 18, evening programs are mandatory, but they allow some freedom, too. And there are some nights/ weekends off throughout the program. You are on your own for most meals and need to make it to classes on your own. No one is holding your hand to get from place to place.

I did the program this past summer as a minor and was surprised at how much freedom I had. Other than mandatory events, if you had free time and were back by 11, you could literally go wherever you wanted. And there was a lot of free time, actually, because classes were scheduled in groups so you often had two hour blocks free during the day plus lunch.

I applied last year as an incoming HS Senior and didn’t get accepted. I am going to apply again this year and have a few questions.
I know it said last year on their website that you can receive college credit if you took private vocal lessons. It doesn’t say that on their website this year. Is it still possible to receive the credit? How many units did you earn by attending?

Thank you!

D participated as a rising senior last year so didn’t receive any college credits. At the closing performance, Dr. Wesbrooks announced that last year was the most competitive ever for their summer program. They had 238 applicants for only 32 slots.

Hi! I know this is an older thread but, I was just wondering if anyone has recieved a notification on if they made the program for this summer of 2011? Or if not, when do you usually hear about it, since the website didn’t say exactly when in April we would hear about it. Any information would help! Thanks and good luck!! :)

Bump!! any answers would be wonderful! :)

If it’s any consolation, we haven’t heard about NYU’s summer art intensive program. They say on their website that we will hear by April 15. The application deadline was April 1.

When older D was accepted into the MT program 4 years ago, we rec’d notification by mail. Now that NYU is notifying applicants by e-mail, I am expecting that it will be done on line.

Good luck!

Ohhh Okay!! Thanks for the info! I was getting a little nervous haha Okay! Yes I thought that they would be emailing us acceptances. So did your daughter really enjoy the program? Good luck to you too!! :)

My older D enjoyed the program so much that she is currently in her junior year as a VP major (MT). The summer she spent at NYU convinced her that it was her first choice.

Now younger D is considering NYU for art and has applied for the summer.

Good luck!
