Summer program Cornell Nanobiotech and NIH

Hey You guys, my friend just told me about this page. I got accepted to the Nanobiotechnology Summer Program and NASA SHARP, but im going for Nanobio. SO i heard from ELlen kong already. Dont worry, im sure you guys will be accepted as well! :)

did you really? when did you get it? congrats, btw

"Hmm, I was under the impression that she only sent out only 8 or 10 transcript requests. Its always hard for anyone to sort through more than 30 applications per avaible position. Selection becomes rather aribitary for some of these programs (ex. RSI). Does anyone think she will send out acceptance letters before the rest?" - Atomosmoin

do you mean 8-10 request per slot (64-80 total)?

Oh well, I guess we will find out soon.

I actually got my acceptance E-mail ( I was waiting by the mail box like an idiot) on April 20th (the day I had to tell NASA SHARP if i was attending or not). It was horrible! For a whole week all I could think about was which program I should attend. But I love bio and engineering i dunno if i can see myself doing that.....but u never know. But yea, good luck, im sure u guys will hear from her soon.

"Dont worry, im sure you guys will be accepted as well!"

Lucky guy. This probability marks failure for the rest of us... sigh How can you say any of us will get acceptance letters if they have been sent? Looks like I will have to break out the business cards and start calling some local universities....

Mobius about the transcript requests. She seems to only have sent them to the best applicant of each school. None or few were sent to those without at least a high school level course in biology. Also Ellen Kong strongly advocates increasing female and minority participation in the sciences. From the pictures of the participants from previous years, it seems that selection is made for approximately 4 males and 4 females, half of which tend to be underrepresented minorities. Given the self selection of the program's applicants you can reasonable expect an overwhelmingly male applicant population. Selection would then favor females. Empirically, there is also an artificially high and often arbitrary variability in ranked selection processes due to bottle neck... Conclusion: I cant quite remember why I thought ~15 were sent out, lol.

If anyone gets in, could you please post your stats?

What if you were taking Biology this year, and would have it done by the time you went to the course? Does that also not count?

IDK!!! I dont think she would know... except that it probly wasnt on your transcript. If you put biology down under courses, then how would she be able to tell when you took biology?

They encourage URM participation and also say that mentioning race is voluntary. Hmmm... That's not always a good thing... Because a black could fear racial discrimination (hey before you know about affirmative action in college admissions you probably fear discrimination more than anything else) and not put his/her race on the form and then get rejected.

Anyways what would happen if one didn't mention race? Wouldn't hurt if applicant is white or Asian (though Asian last names are quite distinguishable) but would hurt if applicant is URM.

It's on the transcript, because the transcript shows the classes we're taking now. And she didn't even ask for my transcript..so yeah..I don't know.

argh, this was perfect though, it was the exact field i wanted to go into!!! guess ill have to poke around at the u of m....see if any professor'll take me

why did LeFYRtigre make encouraging remarks about our chances of being admited? Isnt that a suspicious thing to say?

i think hes legit

Hey, Im a Female and Mexican American, but I dont think that's the only reason I was accepted. Im a really good student. I attend the California Academy of Mathematics and Science (Public High School). I've had straight A's for as long as I can remember and our school provides a rigorous curriculum, soo I dont think the only reason I was accepted was because of my sex and race. I try to work as hard as I can to earn what I have.

Bingo. You are a minority with a lot of money or no? This is a free program, they're probably looking for those that work hard to get the small earnings they do. Argh, I ..well, my letter probably didn't show that.

I come from a low income family, but I have a job and balance school. I work for most almost everything that I own and pay my own bills. So the stipened won't make a big difference, I would've been working either way.

Did you include all of this in your application? All of the ECs and the fact that you have a low income? Gosh..it annoys me that my school is so stupid and it makes me look like I haven't done anything at all while all of these other people go to great schools which makes them look fantastic. I try to do stuff outside the school, but when your school is so low that it struggles just to be accredited, then you're doing a whole lot of work outside the school just to get to standard, and you don't look so hot. Argh.

congrats lefyrtigre, you deserved it

yea, my school has been struggling from the beginning to get all the funding it needs. from what I have heard the school district that we are part of hardly gives us money, so we rely on donations from companies and people. and no i did not include that I come from a low income famly of any of my extra curriculur activities in my application and im sure she doesnt know. thanxs wishful_thinker

The classes are really good though, my school offers the bare minimum that's required by law.
