Summer Program for High School Sophomore

I have been procrastinating on the summer program search process because I was undecided about whether I should do anything, since so many students these days fill their summers to look good on college apps already. However, since I really lack in the extracurricular aspect despite my #1 academic class rank, I am seriously considering a summer program again, and I was hoping you guys can help me.

Do you know of/Have you attended any good programs that are still accepting applications for this summer, and hopefully scholarships applications too? I know I'm pretty late, but my family's financial situation isn't that great.

Some things I'm looking for:
1.good, solid program (not highly-priced or overrated, ideally actually has something to do with the college it's hosted at instead of just renting space, prestigious-ness not a requirement but would be nice) I want an enriching experience that will let me take away something and make me be a better person, not just look fancy on an app with me unable to honestly express enthusiasm if I write about it.
2.related to Business if possible, because I might want to major in that but would like to experience it more. I'm interested in Science & Math, but have no accomplishments & no desire to pursue those careers. But I have heard that business programs are not really worth it b/c they're so vague and extensive, so please tell me your opinion also.

Please also include the program's admission standards, I want to get a feel of my chances. Thank you.

PS: What are your thoughts on famous-campus-programs & out-of-country-programs?
and what is the general opinion about "internship" programs where you have to pay them for an opportunity to work for them? (like DiscoveryInternships)

does not have to be business related, can be something like Leadership or Writing or Cultural studies (actually I would love to go to Spain or something & learn by immersion). Just not completely math/science oriented, please.

also, do you guys think earning college credit for these things are important? because if they work out, they basically save you tuition in college, but it seems that few colleges care for summer college anyway.

It’s pretty late in terms of applying for programs, but I would suggest this site: Teen Ink magazine’s website, then click on the summer program at top right. You can filter by interest. It’s suprisingly good and includes most of the really good one’s. In terms of scholarships, that will be tricky for what’s available now. They include most of the college based prog. and I’ve found most of what my high schoolers have done each summer there. If you can’t find something you’re able to apply for, maybe consider doing an extensive volunteer job? My son worked as a teaching assistant at a local art center much of last summer. Find something that shows you are passionate about something! Look at Earthwatch’s site for travel related volunteering --still cost some money but more affordable than most :).

thanks for the tip! looks like a good site :)
