Yes, it makes a big difference to have someone who actually plays your instrument on faculty! They have an amazing faculty... I want to go so badly! You all should check out their website and videos of last year's festival.

Steans actually contacted me and said they are not set up to take bassists...

Singermama,
When/how did your daughter hear about Interlochen? My daughter applied to the advanced vocal studies and we did not think we would hear before the end of the month. Interlochen is one of the very few summer programs available for the serious vocal student still in high school and it is excellent. The instrumental program is amazing--the recordings I've heard are incredibly impressive.

Congratulations to your daughter!! That's a wonderful acceptance.

We heard from Interlochen Vocal Arts and Operetta by mail yesterday. We have to make the commitment by April 2nd, so that they can offer placement to others if we were to decline the offer. Remembering that every advanced vocal studies applicant is also considered for the VAO, it could take until April 15th to sort out the waitlist. Good luck!

D received her Interlochen package in the mail yesterday also...d is instrumental. I cannot tell you how incredible the Interlochen experience is. It was the best summer of d's life, and we enjoyed spending time there also. We were told it was a magical place, that bonds would be made and it becomes a part of you. They are right. D made several close friends, made connections that took her to colleges she would have never considered and spent a summer completely surrounded by others who share the same passion as her. For us as non musical parental units....well, we thought it was pretty cool. :D
I asked d what she knew about the vocal program. She simply reminded me that she stayed in the same cabin that Norah Jones did, Josh Grobin went there and last summer Rennee Fleming sent her daughter there. She mentioned several other names, but I got her point.
ariamom-I wanted to let you know d's acceptance package came a day or two after everyone else was posting their notices last year. I know of someone who was waitlisted and they received a notice the same time as acceptances went out. So, either way, I think you will get something in the mail. You can always call...they are extremely helpful and understanding. And this does give you a little insight to the waiting for college acceptances.....ugh.
Good luck and congrats!! Now it is time for you to shop for navy shorts, capris and pants!!!

As always . . . this board is incredibly positive and knowledgable!! At least the wait gives you time to practice (in your mind anyway) the rejection spiel.

Is this like college--fat envelope is good, thin is not so good? ;)

D received a fat envelope from Interlochen. They include every form and admissions information in the packet. Not sure what they send if waitlisted. Brevard and Tanglewood came through an e mail. D got a kick out of Interlochen sending everything because they are a very green campus. As far as college...most of d's acceptances came in a small envelope or through an e mail! More and more campuses are going green and will put forms online instead of sending them. Three years ago with older d it was a fat envelope you wanted. Times of change!

My daughter applied to interlochen because I went there on an instrument in the 70s. I loved it and wanted her to go there, too. I wasn't sure about the quality of vocal instruction in contrast to the instrumental instruction. I'm trying to do a cost benefit analysis of the program. If the instruction is outstanding then I don't mind the cost. The lack of internet connection is bit of concern as the internet is to this generation as mail was to my generation. I got mail from my friends while at interlochen (it was 8 weeks back then). My daughter has been to other summer programs with more freedom (Brown/Science). I'm just looking at it from all angles. I called the camp and got vague answers to some questions about how students are selected for the various choirs. If someone has more information on the quality of the choirs and instruction I would be grateful.

The only place where you'll find better viola faculty (at least this summer from what I've seen) is at Karen Tuttle's workshop. Orford has always been a chamber music hotbed, and tends to fall off the US radar because of location. A great program for intensive instrument specific work.

My son will be attending Interlochen for the fourth time this year. Re internet (or lack thereof): This concerned my Facebook-addicted, cell phone-addicted son a lot. It turns out that it does not matter at all and, indeed, when he could have taken an opportunity to get on line, he chose not to. Our kids tend to rely heavily on communication via internet to the point that they spend time with it everyday. My son liked the fact that his world was Interlochen only for a few weeks. In addition, his days were so full that getting onto a computer would have been a scheduling dilemma.

We send him to camp with a couple of phone cards and he calls us every few days. (There are phones.) He could call his friends at home, too, if he wanted to. (He generally hasn't.) He also finds snail mail quaint, although as a teenage boy, he much prefers being on the receiving end than on the sending one! Also, the camp has a setup where we can e-mail him daily (and we do); the camp prints out our e-mails and distributes them with the regular mail. So, we are in frequent contact. That said: If I don't hear from him, it means he's happy, busy and occupied, so I am happy, too.

As a side note: There is a Facebook group for the kids and a Facebook group for the parents. Check the camp website for more info. My son "met" some kids on line beforec camp started, and uses the group to keep in touch with old friends.

violadad - I had a feeling you might know! It looks great on the website, now we just have to scramble to put in an application. D had decided not to do music and didn't want to do any camp auditions during the time period when she would have needed to...hopefully she can pull something together under pressure!
