Summer Programs at Exeter, Choate, and Loomis

I recently applied to the summer programs at Exeter, Choate, and Loomis. I was accepted to Choate and am still waiting to here back from Exeter and Loomis. As of right now, my first choice is Choate, but I may be persuaded. If you have any information or experiences with any of these three schools' summer programs, they would be great to here!

I attended Choate’s summer programs last year (didn’t apply to the rest) and I loved every minute of it. I took Debate, Language of Literature and Geometry. The experience I had there was the main reason why I applied for boarding school. The dorm advisors, teachers, etc were all very nice and I had fun even with the academic rigor of the camp.

Thank you for your help, @boardingschoolx. Here are some questions I sent my tour guide when I found out I was accepted:
-What are some things that most people would not think of bringing and/or that a school would not necessarily specify but could be helpful whether it be in the classroom or somewhere else?
-Are there any “essential” places to visit, eat, etc. in the city of Wallingford, on campus, or somewhere else near Choate?
-What is there to do during free time?
-What policies are in place regarding leaving campus?
-Are there Saturday classes?
-Are there any quintessential Choate activities, clubs, etc. that would be a worthwhile experience?
-How and where is laundry done on campus?
-Do you have any other information that may be of importance but I forgot?

I realize that some of these questions may be a bit redundant and that you may have already answered a few, so feel free to pick and choose.

-BUY A FAN. Wallingford (the town Choate’s in) gets EXTREMELY HOT in the summer. They don’t offer air-con in your individual rooms, so your fan pretty much becomes your best friend during the Choate Summer Programs. (they sell fans at the school store, so you can buy one on your 1st day. There’s also a Walmart nearby, so you can go there too.)

-SO MANY. Mr. D’s is highly recommended by all Choate Summer alumni- they sell baked goods. There’s also a Thai restaurant nearby that serves THE best pad thai. You can also pick up brochures for other restaurants (they have numbers of popular places you can get take-out from) at the S.A.C. They’ll also have shuttle buses every week, so you can watch films at the nearby theater, shop at nearby malls, or visit Walmart. They’ll also offer other trips-- when I went, there was a trip to the Six Flags in New England and a trip to NY and Boston.

-SO MANY THINGS! Visit the S.A.C.- they sell food and they have pingpong tables etc. Or you could swim in the pool. And as I’ve stated before, you can always sign up for weekend trips.

-YES. But the classes’ durations are shortened.

-Not really. The dances are fun, I guess.

-You can either do it yourself or send it to E&R. When I went, we had to put our laundry out on Mondays- I think?- and we would receive them the following Wednesday.

-I’m too lazy so no. :)

hope this helps! Feel free to PM me.

I attended Exeter’s summer program and it was the best five weeks of my life! I was in the CSI cluster which was amazing! The cluster included digital photography, mystery lit, and forensic science. We even got to do our own murder investigation. Similar to @boardingschoolx I applied to Exeter mainly because of my summer experience. If you have any questions, ask away.

I also went to Choate last summer and had the the best summer of my life. My mother taught there so i lived in a house on campus. However, I spent a lot of time in the dorms hanging out with friends and playing games. I loved every part of it. I definitely think would recommend it. Like @boardingschoolx said above, There are so many places to go and things to do. Many people go to Walmart on the weekends or to Mr. D’s (my personal favorite). Six flags New England was definitely the best trip. Even though there are Saturday classes, the classes are nothing like public school classes. The classes are reasonably small and very interesting. Again I wasn’t in a dorm, but I’m pretty sure you just have to sign out to leave campus.
Hope this helps! :)>-

Naw Exeter is where’s it’s at, the campus is a mini Harvard and so clean and sophisticated and air conditioned in the class rooms (not the dorms, but a good fan takes care of that). Plus they have so many places to eat downtown and the grill has break fast and lunch and dinner and yes go there!

Most classrooms have air conditioned classrooms… And are you implying that Choate and Loomis aren’t clean and sophisticated? :)

And I happen to know for a fact that Loomis has a GREAT barbeque place not far from there.

Thank you everyone who responded. I committed to Exeter a few days ago, and I am so excited!

Great choice! You’ll have so much fun. What cluster?

@needtoboard‌ I am currently in tenth grade so although I am not in a cluster, I will be taking Global Economics, the Journey Inward, and AP Level Preparation.

The grill isn’t a barbeque! It’s like a classy walmart with everything you could want from candy to soap and drinks and a bakery
