I was wondering if there is anybody out there who has taken this summer course, or knows anything about it other than the details on the website. About Music Theatre Conservatory I am from the UK and want to come to the USA to do a Summer School, as there are no longer MT summer schools here in the UK really, and also it would be good to get a change of scene. I am too old for any of the high school age ones, so I am looking for courses that accept over 18s. I think that CAP21 looks incredible, but it is expensive - I could fund the course itself, but accomodation in NYC is so expensive. The Notre Dame course looks good - intense and challenging, and 6 weeks, which is a good length for me, but I have been unable to find out much about it other than the website details. If anyone has been there, or knows anybody who has, or knows about it by reputation, then any guidance would be much appreciated. It is appealing because for the 6 week course plus on site accomodation it only costs $3205, whereas CAP21 is $3750 without accomodation. I have also looked into Circle in the Square, which has more reasonable course fees, but is a week longer, so that is an extra week's accomodation to pay for, and it doesn't look as intensive as either of the other two. The other course I looked at was Broadway Theatre Project, but that is only 3 weeks, and ideally I would prefer something longer than that. Any thoughts/advice would be really appreciated, as the Notre Dame course is by far the best value for money on paper (ie hours, length = cost), but if it isn't a good course it obviously is not good value for money! Thanks in advance (and if there happen to be any lovely people in NYC who would love to put up an MT obsessed English girl for the Summer for free then please let me know ;) I babysit on demand!)

I forgot a question - are there any good MT summer courses in Chicago? My aunt lives there so the lack of rent would make things simpler, but I haven't been able to find anything for college age students so far. Anywhere I should look into?

I have a question as well. Would it make sense for a high school senior, as I am one now, to do a musical theatre summer program this summer?
I want to keep busy this summer, doing something I enjoy. But I don't think many summer programs are meant for high school graduates. From what I've seen, most of them are directed at high school juniors and occasionally sophomores.
Can anyone help me?

clairetine- Oklahoma City University has one of the best summer programs in the country! I know MANY kids who go every year as what they call "super seniors". Some are kids who will be attending OCU in the fall and some will be attending other colleges. You will see both. There are two, 3 week sessions during the summer. You will take music theory, dance, acting and piano as well as weekly voice master classes and workshops. All of these are taught by OCU faculty. The show itself is directed by the actual head of the dept! I believe they are doing Seussical this summer.
Hope this helps!

Thank you for the information! I will definitely look into it.

Can anybody help at all regarding my questions?

I don't know MT programs in Chicago, but Second City has a fun two week teen boot camp where you learn improv and comedy. Also there is Acting Studio Chicago that has teen classes in monologues, acting on camera and they do a mini-showcase at the end. My D got a local agent from that several years ago. In Evanston the Piven Theatre School has a summer course for teens that is very well-regarded and a friend is a voice teacher there so you can get lessons.

Thank you very much for your reply ccsmom. Unfortunately I am 22, so too old for any of the programmes you suggested, but I really appreciate the reply.

You might want to check with Northwestern. They might have something more appropriate for older students.

Just rec'd an email from Arena Stage in DC
They are offering the following this summer:

Musical Theater Training Company at Arena Stage
July 27 - August 7, 2009
Students entering grades 10, 11, 12 or the summer after high school graduation

Faculty members for 2009 include Arena Stage artists George Fulginiti-Shakar (music director at Arena Stage and DC's leading theaters), Parker Esse (Broadway & Arena Stage dancer & choreographer) and Lynn McNutt (Arena Stage and regional theater actor & university professor).

Spaces are extremely limited.

I don't know anything about the program except that the faculty names listed are amazing and that the Arena Stage is one of the best regional theaters in the area (they have two shows going to Broadway right now)

Okay.. so I decided to just check up with the MPulse site and saw this:

News and Updates

Updated March 17, 2009

Click the Application link above to apply online.

Although the priority application deadline has passed for most sessions, applications are currently being accepted for ALL MPulse 2009 sessions, including the Musical Theatre Workshop.

okay maybe I'm paranoid but what does this all mean?! Was there a lack of applicants? I would be quite surprised if this was the case....

I am sure the difficult economic times are having an impact on applications. These programs cost a good deal of money and many people just can't afford it right now, translating in a drop in applications.

I agree that the economy probably has made many people rethink their plans for summer.

I was just accepted into NYU steinhardt's summer program! It's my 1st choice so I'm so excited!

Millie, perhaps if you started a new thread called something like "22-year-old from UK seeks US summer MT program" or "Seeking opinions on Notre Dame summer program" you could attract the attention of somebody who could help.

Good luck!

You could also start a thread with the title "English MT student will babysit for summer lodging in NYC." :-)

Sorry, you might not be English, you might be Irish or Scottish. :-) Anyway, another thread you could start here is "MT student from UK looks to share NY apt, summer "09."

I'd suggest starting a thread with a similar title on the Theatre/Drama majors forum too.

Anyone received them yet? On facebook some people already got acceptances so just wondering about you guys cause I haven't heard back from them yet

I am indeed English ;)

My D was accepted at CMU and Interlochen in Design/Tech. Has anyone heard from Cherubs yet?
