Summer Programs - Discussion

Seffie371 - Nope I’m not in Michigan. I’m sure everyone’s decisions will come shortly (:

gpmom48230, I sent you an email message but I’m not sure it went through. My daughter plans to attend OCU for 2nd session too. She has heard great things about the program & is really looking forward to it! Congratulations to your daughter!

My D got accepted to second session for OCU today by email…we have not yet heard from MPulse—we’re on West Coast. She got email from NYU Tisch last Friday with acceptance–she is leaning towards NYC (of course) but it is pricey.

Congratulations to all who heard from OCU and Michigan today!!!

Has anyone else been accepted by NYU Cap 21 4 week program? Anyone else going to that one?

My daughter is awaiting news from Mpulse and we are west coasters too…haven’t heard anything yet…i am thinking that if Michigan folks got info in the mail today, it may be Monday until we hear!

Congratulations to all of you who have heard today! How exciting!

For those who have been accepted, what does the mail look like? Is it a package or a letter?

If it helps anyone, we live in Michigan and have not heard anything from mpulse (via email or regular mail) as of today. Last year D was waitlisted and was informed via snail mail. After that, she was kindly updated through regular emails from Dody Blackstone. Has anyone been officially waitlisted this year?

OKAAAAY… kinda off topic but I was just accepted into the Interlochen Arts Academy for next semester. I am ECSTATIC and SOOO excited! (they actually rejected me for the summer HS Production but I think its cause they’re doing Anything Goes, and yep its one which doesn’t really suit me, but they offered me the Workshop which I didn’t originally audition for… :))

Congrats for all of you who got into MPulse! That’s a lot of people from CC who were accepted  That goes to show what immense talent there is on here. Keep us posted on how it goes (:

Hey everyone!

Just thought I’d let you all know that I got an MPulse acceptance today in the mail. I live in STL, so that means the mail is on its way to the west coast! Oh and it came in a big packet/envelope thing. Good luck to everyone who’s waiting, and congrats to those who made it! See you this summer =)

Bway Junkie - when did you hear from interlochen about the HS musical production? We are still waiting…

Congrats BWayjunkie, you’ll have to best time of your life! I went to the academy for three years as a theatre major, so if you have any questions feel free to ask!
I also went to camp as an MT, so if anyone has questions, don’t hesitate to PM me.

dotzfam - I was told by email (and offered the workshop in the same email)

Oh and rising seniors, if you haven’t already, join the Musical Theatre Class of 2014 group on Facebook :-)

My D went to interlochen last year and LOVED IT! If you want to know anything or need info on anything…let us know …congrats to you!!!

Congrats to everyone out there with summer acceptances. This is an exciting time for everyone! My D heard yesterday that she got accepted into Governor’s School. She attends a private school in Virginia and the dean and faculty seems to be pushing her toward Governor’s School. She was accepted early admission to the Cherubs program and we’ve already made the deposit. Are we “off” target to decline Governor’s School for Cherubs? The faculty and administration at her school are of the mind set that “no one turns down Governor’s School”.

terig, although our state doesn’t offer Governor’s Schools (another subject…), we live near the state border, and the neighboring state does. Daughter has friends who have been a part of it…and yes, school administrators tend to favor the Governor’s Schools. They are familiar with it, and know it looks good on the kid’s (and yes, the schools) C.V. In the state we’re familiar with, Governor’s School attendance is often linked to some scholarship aid, if the student attends college in their home state (and this is not guaranteed…). So…is your D planning to attend college in Va? Compare Governor’s School offerings w/the Cherubs… Which program fits her needs/desires/future plans more? In the end, it all comes down to the best fit for your kid…

Thanks for your reply. What is C.V.? There is not one school in VA that she is applying to. She will be auditioning for musical theatre and a few straight theatre programs. Top choices are: Northwestern, NYU, CMU (of course, these 3) and then there are some other programs she’s will audition for: SUNY Purchase, Syracuse, Muhlenburg, Elon…Northwestern is #1 choice, but it is terribly competitive academically and students far greater than my D have been declined admission, so we are certainly realistic. I’ve posted before that she is an academic with a passion for theatre, NU and NYU are dream schools for her and her college advisor reminds her that these are reaches. I’m encouraging her to follow the dream (I’m thinking Cherubs) and this would mean declining Governor’s School, but I’m not confident in my own advice.

Governor’s Schools are supposed to be great but I think the decision should be first and foremost which of the two program options appeals the most to your D. How many weeks is Gov School by the way? If it is significantly shorter than Cherubs, that may be a consideration itself.

I think the advice of your school counselor is limitted and the advice I think is what they would say to someone applying to regular colleges and how good Gov school may be on the resume and so on. But your D is interested in many BFA programs plus Northwestern’s theater program. The advice from your school counselor, as good as that person likely is at what they do, is not really tuned into what a person pursuing a BFA or theater in college might follow. It is a very different type of admissions process. For someone seeking the colleges and programs you mention, both these summer programs might be good and in fact, as I know more about Cherubs, that one is excellent preparation for someone considering a college theater program. Gov School may be too, don’t get me wrong! But the reasons the school counselor favors Gov School have more to do with regular college admissions but your D is not going to be doing regular college admissions and so that factor is going to be different.

It isn’t about the resume on the application so much and more about which program is most geared to the experience she wants to have and considering the kinds of college programs she is seeking to be admitted to. Your school counselor may know very little about Cherubs and how it is an excellent summer experience for someone applying to college theater programs. Gov. School is as well. But the counselor may think of Gov School as great for college admissions in general and not realize that Cherubs is great for theater program admissions preparation/training. Both programs are good, in other words, given your D’s goals. Therefore, it should be about which program is most aligned with how she wants to spend the summer.

Terig, I also live in Virginia and considered applying to gov school. I was under the impression that by applying you were committing. That sounded very weird to me, especially considering that they don’t really have any way of enforcing it.

C.V. = curriculum vitae = Latin for resume :-)…or something to list on a college app. Let us know what your daughter decides.

Thanks everyone. My daughter’s mind and heart are certainly made up! She has never waivered from Cherubs, and I have encouraged her to do that. What I wasn’t sure of is whether I was advising her with her best interest in mind. Also, her college counselor encouraged her to “follow the dream” – it’s the others (Dean, teachers, etc.) that have commented “you don’t say no to Governor’s School.” In fairness to them, they have not heard of Cherubs and are of the mindset that as long as you pay the tuition fee, you can go to NU for the summer, but Governor’s School is actually highly selective (and as a couple of you pointed out, what they are familiar with). I know people on this board will say not to worry about the resume, but the resume (and audition for audition based schools anyway) is what will make her stand out when up against all of these amazing kids across the country. Face it, the odds are against you in these highly competitive schools and I’ve read on this board about brilliant kids with resumes much more impressive than my daughter’s getting rejected from the very schools she would like to attend. I guess it makes me wonder “what are they really looking for?” Hence, back to the original question!

MPULSE

Any more news from Michigan? Are acceptance/wait lists/ and rejections all going
out at once? I did see from past post that a few rejection emails have been sent.
And I see that a few have been accepted by letters…
