Summer programs in the NY/NJ area

I live in NJ and want to do something science related this summer. I want to join a summer long program or two.

Here is the thing though. I checked out the liberty science center thing, and they want you to APPLY, not only that, but the applications were due two weeks ago, so I can't do that anymore. Is there anything else at LSC I can do? Is there anything in the city I can do (Manhattan)? Again, I live in NJ and would have to take an hour train ride up there but I would be participating in two different summer long programs. So. Yeah. Any ideas?

It would be awesome if I could have a combination of a curriculum (honors and AP courses taken at a school) and having to do like a research project.

My GPA is not that great because I screwed up and didn't care at the start of high school but I really want to do something big this summer. I really need advice.

So far I have found:

Liberty science center (application deadline has passed for one of their major HS programs)
NASA "SHARP"-Cannot find any info on this
AMNH-Seems like all their good stuff is reserved for students who attend HS in NYC.

Please help...

You can try NYU's summer program. They have lots of diff courses. Maybe check if the Museum of Nat Hist in NYC has anything like the one in LSC? Also, Rutgers has some programs. I went to TARGET (which was for women) but they might have some for both genders.... wait you are a guy right? looks at your username- jef (If you're not I'm so sorry)
I'm applying to the LSC one. Do you know if anyone did that before and how hard it is to get in?
