I was wondering what programs/academies are offered for freshman that are free to apply for and stand out in a college application to Harvard? I only know of a prestigious academy held at MIT, but it is for juniors only.

It makes me so angry when I see posts like this. There are schools that are just as amazing as, if not better than, Harvard University. Stop obsessing over it! You should take a look at this article written by an admissions officer:

There are highly regarded programs and if you use the search features of CC you will eventually come across lots of posts about them (TASS, MathCamp, etc.). Generally, the most highly regarded programs are amongst the least expensive. That being said, you should not try to enroll in any specific program just to impress colleges. You can do great work at local university if you are working in a field you are passionate about. It is your enthusiasm for what you’re doing that will hopefully set you apart from your peers.

if your financial situation means that you have to work during the summers, that’s fine. You can still demonstrate your love of learning and intellectual curiosity by completing a MOOC or similar coursework. The point is don’t seek out the one thing or program that you think will make you interesting to colleges. Find something you truly enjoy doing and do a lot of it and you will inevitably become an interesting person in the process. This is far more attractive to potential colleges.

Thanks Falcon1. I’ll probably stick to something I’m actually interested in.
