I am a sophmore right now and I am hoping to go to an elite school, especially Yale. I was wondering about which Summer Programs at Yale or elsewhere look good on an application and which ones are just a summer camp. Thank You.

Don’t participate in programs just because they “look good on an application.” 2. I would suggest posting this in a different forum.

Summer programs at Y or anywhere else that are expensive and non-selective are not a big plus admissions-wise. The ones that stand out are ones that are competitive and scholarship based (eg. RSI, TASP, Mites, etc.)

as plinz345 said, you should do something you want to do and not just something to look good on an application. Colleges want you to do something over the summer and not just sit around and watch tv. But it doesn’t really matter what you do as long as its something you like. (I always went away to a summer camp that I loved instead of something to look good.)

These people are too quick to condemn summer classes. I took a class at Yale last summer, and I loved it. Sure, taking college classes isn’t the MOST prestigious thing you can do, but if you get A’s then it signifies that you can do college work and were motivated to study during the summer (something that not every high school student can boast.) The college courses for credit at Yale or Harvard (SSP) are similar, and I recommend both. In fact, Yale’s is probably better as the courses are filled more with Yale students and less with high school kids.

If you live in a state that offers it, go to governor’s school.

I went to harvard summer school (may not be the best place to mention that lol) but yeah, loved it! soooo much fun (and work too), prob the best experience in my adolescent lives! Although i still have 3 years of it left lol.

Summer prog 1: expensive, not very selective. Applicant does not show how she benefits from program.

Summer prog 2: inexpensive, selective. Applicant can show how she benefits and how she performed.

Summer prog 3: some money. somewhat selective. Can show performance, etc etc.

I would pick 2 over 3, adn both over 1. Or do something you love like community service or a sport. Do not waste the summer basically

I would just like to clarify that the reason for me doing a summer program would not be to pad my app. I am planning on doing one anyways and I was just wondering which ones looked better than others.
