I've probably missed out on summer program applications this year...I'm wondering what summer programs that you've taken that you've liked the best. I'm also looking for some recommendations of programs to apply to next summer (graduation year is 2008). I have heard nice things about the JHU CTY program, and I did that one summer (a forensic science class) in 2001, but it didn't really rock my socks. Are the other CTY courses better?

If you're looking for science programs for next summer, you might look into the Student Science Training Program at the University of Florida. It's a 7-week residential research program for about 80-90 selected students. You are paired with a lab host in one of your areas of intrest and do research in his/her lab for about 35 hrs/wk. You also attend a morning lecture series, tke and interdisciplinary honors course, write a research paper, and do 2 oral presentations on your research from the lab. The 80 or so students live together in Beaty Towers at UF, and when you're not in lab or lecture or class, you have free time and/or scheduled activities (ie. trip to bush gardens on a saturday or a karaoke night). I attended in 2003, and it was honestly the best 7 weeks of my life. The research was enriching and a great experience, but the social portion was what made an incredible impression on me. I learned a lot and had an impressive program to put on college apps (which won me a $10K research stipend at Tufts University), and at the same time, I met some truly amazing people who I'm still very close friends with. To give you an idea of what you can do with your research (and to prove to you that it's a worthwhile and competative program), one of the girls from my year won the International Science Fair in 2004 with her research from SSTP. 2 won spots at the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. Many went to state science and international science fair.
If you have any questions, let me know :)

but isn't the application for that long due?

not if yanners is looking for a program for next summer (as indicated in both of our posts).

(mangosmmm - the OP is thinking about summer 2006)

here's a list. There are probably people who have had a fabulous experience and a mediocre experience at each of these places. A lot depends on the participant, and on the people they end up interacting with during a given year.

Thanks for the help. The student science training sounds neat, and the link from texas137 was helpful.
