I am an upcoming junior and I want to go to a summer program at a college next summer. I would like it to be somewhat competitive to get into and for it to offer college credits. Writing is definitely my thing. AND if the college was located on the east coast it would be PERFECTO.

My d just finished Cornell's summer program. 3 college credits for a 3-week writing seminar. There are also 6 week courses (for 6 credits, of course).

Tons of universities offer pre-college programs, such as Penn, Columbia, NYU, Harvard, Cornell, among others. Go to different schools' websites and see what they have to offer. Are you looking to board or commute? How much do you want to pay? These things will be important.

Middlebury Breadloaf School of English
Cornell's is excellent, and maybe U of Iowa has a good one

Brown's 7 week program gives you credits. I dont know how hard it is to get into, i only did the mini classes, but it was soooooooo much fun

Most summer programs at reputable schools are not considered highly selective so I wouldn't worry about that too much. Most are around the 50-100% range.

iwannabe_brown....I want to be brown also :)

Did you apply to brown yet or are you an upcoming senior? Do you think that it looks even better if you take a summer program from the college that you want to attend? Also: how much did it cost and what did you have to do to get in? (essay, etc?)

Thanks a lot everyone. I am checking out all the programs.

theoneo

I definitely want to board...there arn't any other options. Cost is important. I don't know how much these things cost, but I am already looking at expensive colleges to attend after I graduate and my parents arn't exactly rolling in cash, so I don't want to burden them with a big bill. The cheaper the better.

WUSTL has one too and they accept about half.

Bumpppppppppppppp

I also attended Brown's Pre-College Summer Program; I highly recommend applying to the program. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a PM.

There is a long thread or two on the Parent's Board about summer programs including Brown.

I believe there is an excellent writing program during the summers at the University of the South.
